I was reading STS and they were talking about making your own spoons. I could see how it would be easy to make spinners but spoons. Any information would be greatly appreciated

AuntyM: I would never correct you. You have it right, as usual. Most of the spoons can be bought in five packs. You then attach the split ring, hook,(I prefer a 2/0 Gami siwash) , and a snap swivel on the other end.

Then throw the entire mess in the river, hook a rock, break off line, curse and repeat as necesary. On rare occassions that sequence will be interupted by some damn fish eating the spoon.

Do you realize that you just said in two sentences what it took Bill to say in an entire book?
How about saying the same thing about float fishing in two sentences as it took that Dave Vedder character to say in his book?

uwfishgirl- go with the #5 split ring. another thing you might want to try that ive had luck with is taking two mor-tacs one gold and one silver and connect the two with a split ring at the top and bottom and fish it in really deep holes. i often pull steelies out of salmon water like this.

the board is very lucky to have you on it and i cant tell you how many evenings i spent as a kid sitting by the fire reading articles and books written by you and other favorite fishing authors. i believe that every fish you catch makes you a better person and in that regard i bet you have helped to make many people, better people.
ps - i love the quote from mr clemmins... he is my only famouse relative so far .... i wish i received more of his writing skill though!!!!

Speaking of great fishing writers, like DV & BH, whatever happened to old Milt Keiser? Haven't seen or heard from him in ages. Anyone know if he is still with us. His stuff still holds up well over time. Not nearly as fun or entertaining though I grant.

Milt is still around and kicking. He is a great guy, but like so many of us is becoming a bit of a curmudgeon with old age.

Milt has always been one of BH's heros, in part because he was an early times spoon master.

Milt nominated me for membership in the Northwest Outdoor Writers a good many years ago. He remains active in our writers association, but has cut back on fishing writing. Funny how many guys seem to back away from winter steelhead fishing after they reach an advanced age.

As I am not yet 60, I figure I have a few more years of winter steelheading in me. But I admit my recent trips to Central America hold up pretty well in comparison.

BTW: I case anyone wonders why I'm not posting for a coupe of weeks, it's because I leave Wednesday for a nine day trip to the Amazon for peacock bass.

I used to have a book written by Milt Keiser made the mistake of loaning it to a friend.It had info on launches,bank fishing access etc on the rivers in this state. Learned a lot and really enjoyed reading that book and others by him

Milt Keizer is truly one of the all-time greats. His book from amato Publications on steelheading is in this anglers eyes the best work out there. He has been there and done that and still fished old school, as it should be.

I still have the old baby blue covered steelheading book (the one with Milt holding a 20 pound Snoquallmie R. hen over his head). What a classic, put out by the folks at the now defunct Fishing Holes. Over half of the launches and rivers are closed or no longer exist, but it is still a great read.
