New to the OP river fishing and looking for advice for drifting the OP rivers. I have found a lot of the launches for the Hoh, Duc, and Bog and drifted the Bog from the hatchery to Three rivers and Hoh from Oxbo to Nolan creek and caught fish. I talked with a few fisherman to find out about these drifts before going and found them to be easy and productive. However I would like to explore other rivers and common sense has always told me to find out what is down river before I go. I am looking for suggestions for drifts on the Hoh, Duc, Clalwah, and Upper Bog. But have heard there are some ticky spots to be careful on. Any thoughts, suggestions, and places to avoid without going with someone else first.

Welcome WWU, I read your first post and thought you might want an answer from someone who has asked the same question. On the Sol Duc , the hatchery to maxield is relatively an easy drift . But I will always make the same suggestion.... spend the money and hire a experienced professional guide. One day of fishing to save a buck is not worth your life or worse yet maybe a friend , family member, etc.

A little hint for all. Use the search function up to the right and run a rearch for each of the river names and you'll find past discussions of each river and launch points and what to expect.

Same can be said for loads of others rivers across the NW.

Lots of useful information in the archives of the site that folks have been kind enough to share over the years ... it's right there waiting smile

Wasn't that some cheesy Richard Marx song??

eek

Now I'm an 86'er too and I'll give you boston, they were pretty cool, but...

What up with Styx?? Blech... babble

If I remember right, to get the girls in the mood it was Lionel Ritchie...

But I guess it wouldn't rhyme very well...

Avoid the Calawah alltogether. Call Bob, our host here, and schedule a trip in there and you will know what I mean.

Dont float the hoh so you are taking out at oxbow without running those stretches with someone else first. Even the very upper hoh is rough at times with big changes after the high waters. The lower Hoh seems to be the most mild section.

The upper Sol Duc is said to be a learner and the float from Whitcomb Dimmel down to Lions club is another one I would not do without going with a guide or someone who has run it a few times. The very bottom drift on the Duc has a few tricky spots too.

Huh? Relatively easy? That has some class III rapids and can be downright treacherous below 5 boards. I would strongly recommend that you take a trip with someone who knows "The Way" before trying this one. I did not take this advice and we were very sorry that we didn't. We hit the "Wall" and did not see That Confounded Bridge until well after dark. Be careful on this one! It was a huge step up from the upper Bogacheil and the Hoh (Oxbow to Nolan Creek).

Gutz is right on the money on that one. I've been down from the hatchery many times with my uncle, and I would think twice about that drift. That reminds me. I've never been on the section above Bear creek before and Liers news was saying that, that area is a relitively easy drift. I heard it's nasty up there.

I've fished em all and would say that the Calwah is the toughest because of its size. My suggestion is to bank fish some and hike a little ways and check out that section to see where the trouble spots are. It really depends on the water levels. I would never try the Duc in low water unless I had a pontoon. Be smart and stay in good shape. Luckily I'm a cross country runner.

i agree with brad and gutz. i float from the hatchery to maxfield all the time and stiil puckers my you know what every once in awhile. stay alert and becareful all those rivers have been known to take a boat or two.i would not consider the hatchery a easy drift .do not believe what you read in fishing and hunting news.

Bring a dry suit and a high float life vest for the bear creek run...
