I was considering a trip there, but am going to fish the Quinault this year instead.
A friend of mine lives in Alaska and fished the Situk a couple of years ago.
He pounded the steelies.
Anyone here ever fish it?

Haven't been there since the 80's. Fished it a couple of times. I remember lots of rain, river going uo and down like a yo-yo, and losing lots of fish in the brush. Nothing really big but lots of fish. Every incoming tide was a definate adventure.

My Dad went there last summer for Coho and had a lot of fun. He's going back in August 2005. It has a great silver run, is close for Halibut if they are in season, and I've read it also has a great steelhead run. (lots of bears too)

If I remember correctly, the Steelhead restrictions were pretty tight, if it makes a difference to you.

I did it a few times in the 80's . there was a bear at the takeout of the Situk . A sow with teo cubs. She would wait until you unloaded the boat and when you showed fish she would charge across the river. Most people would drop the fish and run for the buggy. She would mosey over and take them back to the cubs. If you stood your ground and yelled at her she would stop and stand on all fours and look at you like "what are you yelling for" and go back to her cubs. The silver run is a fun.

...been going every year for about 20 years for coho in Sept. Good stuff. The Situk and other area rivers, streams, lagoons and roadside ditches full of fish. The coho run gets top billing and for good reason. There are also all other species available too. Best part is that it is remote even for Alaskans...but luckily a 737 gets you there direct. Great salt action too for Kings in May-Jul and monster Halibut May-Sept. This action is only 5 miles off the end of the dock. Beautiful scenery.

The Situk was dying as a steelhead river until they imposed C&R a few years back (think you can keep one trophy fish). I think the Situk is now regarded as the best steelhead river in AK since the run has rebounded in a big way and they say 20 fish days are not uncommon. The Situk is a beautiful river and some say it is the perfect salmon/trout/steelhead environment (lake headwater controls the flow, lots of cover for the fish, river bottom of marl which looks like it was screened!).

I have never done steelhead, but sure would like to. Season peaks Apr-May. The drift is about 14 mi. from the put-in to the ocean. No whitewater to speak of, just river obstructions that sometimes require a chain saw or portaging. The steelhead are supposed to be big and feisty, they say plan on losing lots of gear! Weather is wildly unpredictable that time of year!

i have a friend that goes every year the fish range in size from 8 to 20 lbs they are in good shape the pictuers he has showed me show alot of brush in the river and 20 fish day are preety common the also have good numbers in october and less people he says its starting to get a little crowded and there is a logde up there that rents drift boats for steelhead fishing hope that helps
