I was wondering how far up the fork you can fish? The regs say to the 4100 Rd. Bridge. Cannot find that road on my map and wanted to know about how many miles from the mouth the bridge is located?

Thanks

Not sure where the deadline is but I have been staying low just to be safe. There's fish to be had but you gotta work for them as the water is barely a trickle. Stop by the gas station in Toutle or call them and they should set you straight.... Good luck

The South Fork has no hatchery for Winter Runs. If you are a supporter of Wild Steelhead Release, I would ask you to not fish this run of fish. One thing we can all agree on is that there is some mortality on released fish. This is the run that the Area 5 biologist (can't remember his name) stated was in danger of extinction if WDFW was succesful in getting the ESA steelhead impact raised to 6 or 7% in the Columbia River Spring Chinook fishery. These fish deserve our care, every one is precious, and we are on notice that there is a serious problem here. My $.02 for what its worth.

Eddie

The Biologist name is Dan Rawding.

The 4100 Bridge is the deadline! You can'y miss it , becuase its the first and only bridge that you can drive over after you go by the old Camp 12 site.

If WDFW and Dan didn't believe that the Toutle wild stock couldn't withstand the hooking martially from a c&r fishery, they would not allow it to be open. The Toutle has had a C&R fishery on it for many years, and the run continues to be recovering. If a guy wants to fish C&R on the Toutle, I say go for it!

Eddie, that's exactly why wsr is getting such a bad name lately!

Hundreds of dedicated fly fishermen that support 100% catch and release fish the South Fork of the Toutle every single year for the wild steelhead. The Toutle is not only C&R, its also no bait and barbless too. I would like to see you go to one of the Lower Columbia Fly Fishers meetings and try to tell them to not fish upon that that run of wild steelhead! \:D These guys live and sleep WSR and they are fishing the Toutle every day of winter!

Try going to this site for more information about the 4100 bridge:

I believe Dan said that it woudl wipe out the North fork fish not the south fork. Which is why the Main toutle and north forks are closed.

Just going from memory here.

JJ, you may be right and I may be wrong. If so, as Rosanna Rosanna Danna used to say, Never mind. ;\)

I beleive Weyco has a gate at the bridge. You cant miss it.But I would try. Dont like dents in the rigs.Itll probably be closed \:D If you hit it you went a hair too far.
Unless theres some logging going on above it.Then it may be open.If you go through it they will probably run you out.If your lucky. If not they will have you cited for criminal trespass.
I sure miss the good ole days when you could drive wherever you wanted on logging roads.

Fish the South TOutle If Dan thought it should be closed to angling he'd ask it to be closed. It is the healthiest wild steelhead run in south west washington. But fish it smartly
use single barbless hooks and no bait as required by law. the threat to these fish from sport fishermen is not from cnr anglers but from the vast number of local idiots who are keeping the rivers wild steelhead on a regular basis that according to the local enforcment officer.

The 4100 bridge is where the road ends and you can't go any further.. There is a bridge with a gate across it and you can go no further very easy to find.

Thanks to those who have given some usefull information. Had hopes to going to the OP this weekend, but that is looking less and less likely. Personally, I fish with single barbless hooks no matter what type of freshwater fish I am after, but especially when fishing for steelhead. I also strickly C&R when fishing for metal. I am still wondering about how many miles of the S. Fork are open.

Thanks again

I am not sure how many actual miles it is but there is lots and lots of water.. i'd recommend taking two rods.. one rigged with a jig and float, the other either a drift rig( corkie and yarn or a pink worm.. or a spoon or spinner

Thanks Robert. I think I found the road I was looking for. I mainly fish spinners, but will probably have some floats.

I would say 2 or 3 road miles maybe a little more.
