Is the berkly vanish line in 8 pound test too light for summer fish. Should I take it out or leave it on the trout pole? Thanks guys I just dont want to break off any of the fish i am fortunate to hook. Thanks Kris

I don't want to speak for the board, but my interpretation from past posts is that Vanish is not the answer.
Try doing a search for Vanish and read the posts for yourself.
Good luck

Kris,
From personal experience and what I've heard from others, I would look to another brand. The Vanish seems to break more easily then other brands fluorocarbon. I've had very good luck with Seaguar brand, although it is a bit difficult to find in the Seattle area. Outdoor Emporium does carry it.
Good luck with the summer runs.
Brian

I've had very good luck with Vanish for steelhead. I only use the leader material, not the main line and I only use 14 lb test. Also, make sure you use the improved clinch knot, pull the knot tight very slowly and keep it moist while doing so. If done properly, it should hold up just fine.

I would go with another brand; Vanish is pretty inexpensive as flourocarbons go, but you get what you pay for. The stuff breaks easily, knot strength is not good, and it's difficult to tie knots that hold or don't abrade the line. This is true of all fluorocarbons to some extent, but particularly bad with Vanish.

As Jacob suggests, I would go heavy, I don't use anything less than 12lb, even during the lowest of low flows in September. 12lb fluoro is certainly thicker than conventional 8lb mono when fishing those gin-clear streams, but it has virtually no reflection, so doesn't show up. Also, unless its a dry spring you really don't have to use flourocarbons until well into July. May-June summer-run fish can be hot!! And if your fishing a snow melt stream, or there's an average amount of precip, there's generally enough color so that its just not necessary.

Berkley Vanish sucks. Plain and simple. I lost three fish in a row on that crap. Beware!

No affiliation with Berkley or any other line manufacturer. Your mileage may vary.

They naned it Vanish because your hooked fish will vanish if you use it.

I too think it should vanish from the shelves never to return.

The unfortunate thing is that it appears to be a quality control problem. Some people report good success with it but for me, once I lost three steelhead in one day, I found a new storage place for my Vanish --- in the garbage can.

Kris,

Like the others said, get rid of it quickly! That shi*t sucks! Like what was said above, it breaks way to easy and when it comes to flouracarbon, u really don't need it until later in the summer, but i still don't even use it, i just down size my line to 6 or 8lb. on my float rod and thats good enough for most low clear situations! If u do us Flouracarbon, get some Cabela's Flouracarbon made by Seguar, this is the good stuff! Tight lines, Chris

I think JacobF and I are the only ones who ever say anything good about Vanish. I use 8lb Vanish for tippets in the summer and have no complaints. Moisten knot, tighten slowly.

I use vanish exclusively for my leaders. I have never broke a fish off because of it. I have had the hooks pull out from horsing fish out of log jams but the leader has never broke. I only use 8lb also.

I will never use Vanish again either, even though the Vanish hitting the shelves now say NEW and the rep said they admit there were some quality control issues. My experience with it spoiled it for me forever.

I'm curious as to why you would even bother fishing flourocarbon when you're already using 8lb test. The line will still show some amount of flash just not as much. 8lb should look about like 5. You get the real advantage when your fishing something like 17lb which shows like 10. Imagine being able to pull logs out of log jams and the fish only seeing your line like it's 10lb test \:\) Now that's what I'm talkin about!
