Similar to some people's personal lists to do 50 things in life before they die, I have a list of fish I want to catch. In that quest, I am planning a trip to Green Lake in the next few weeks to try for a big 'ol Tiger Musky since WDFW planted them in 2000. I hear they average 30+ inches and can reach 50 inches, and are ferocious fighters!

2 Questions-

Anyone else ever fish for these in Green Lake or elsewhere and have any tips?

And, Anyone want to try this with me on one weekend morning for a few hours?

I'll throw a big black bucktail all day. I caught 2 last Friday but they didn't fight to good. Big one was about 20# & forgot the camera.

How did you catch them, dragging a Bucktail through the weeds? Was this at lake Tapps or Green Lake?

Casting near the structure with different retrieves. By the logs, stumps & weed lines. 1 hit next to the boat. the other slacked lined me when the lure was dropping. For the thick weeds I'd use a spinnerbait. I wasn't at Green lake ;\)

I grew up fishing them in Michigan along with regular pike and regular muskies. Bucktails,spoons,bluegills/perch and rapallas all work. I think the best time is the 1/2 hour before dark. Find a drop off near the weeds and either troll along it or pitch your lure to the weeds and retrieve back to the boat.
They will often follow the lure right to the boat. If that happens keep your lure in the water and put your pole in the water and do figure 8's along the side of the boat. It works.
I live very close to Greenlake and I've got a canoe....but I've never fished it.
If you'd like to go out one evening I'd be up for it.

Up until two weeks ago, the only muskie I've had on hit an 18" walleye. Two weeks ago, the muskie I caught took a 3" minnow fished on a small leadhead.

I would see if I could find In-Fisherman's Muskie fishing video to rent. They show a couple of techniques that are worthwhile-- like the figure-eight retreive at boatside, a neat technique I used to catch a coho two years ago...

I liked to use a big spinner bait when I fished for them in Canada. What I like about the spinner bait is that it doesn't get hung up in the weeds as much as a spoon, or other jig. I'd try along the weed edges. That's if there is any end to the weeds in Green Lake. Good luck.

I forgot to add that in the upper midwest they are known as the fish of a thousand casts...sounds familiar huh?
