Today was the second time in a row that I have had bank anglers try and force me out of a hole. Very rude. I was in the Iverson hole well before day break and had bank anglers move in and start casting right over my lines. When told that they were casting over my lines they made some remark that I couldn't here and kept right on fishing. If you bank anglers want us boaters to respect you and your water please do the same for us. You were saved today by the other guy in my boat who didn't want a confrontation. Next time it won't be so. So if you were the rude bank angler in the Iverson(Shuwah) hole this morning disrespecting the gray glass boat you had better change your ways.

Sorry to hear \:\( As a bank fisherman (most of the time), I have never had any problem with boaters, and I have never tried to push them off a spot.

And you say "twice in a row?" What's with that? I am not even remotely suggesting that you are doing any wrong, but is there a possibility that you could find a way to fish your spot without being in the way of the "bankies"? It's not your responsibility, I know, just a possible solution.

At any rate, your bad luck can't continue without ruining the peace of fishing, I would think. Best to you.

Sorry to hear your bad experience.
My suggestion is for you to not fish near bankers or fishing on banker holes.
I know that no body owns the river and that a person has the right to fish where ever he wishes but you got a boat and over 95% of the river system. The bankers only have limited holes to fish. Respect them by not boating on their limited fishing access hole.
With all the respect, I doubt that any bankers would come near a boat if they have other holes to fish on.

As for your threat, I have to remind you that bankers are like hyhenas, they will band together and most of them carry heat.

I bank and boat. Respect was lacking. Communication was lacking. You guys should of talked more. As boater, you know the holes. No other holes within a short walk. You should leave. Other holes banker should leave.
I would like to kick some butt myself sometimes as peoples reasoning is sometimes skewed. However, as a boater you will always lose due to the fact if you show aggression by going to the bank and then attacking. Wide open to arrest, doctor bills, law suits and if you get a felony, no gun rights. Just sigh with disgust and leave as the extra anger it causes is not worth getting excited about. Fish On. \:D

Respect goes both ways, There are places on the river that should be left to the bankies and places that obviosly should be left to the boats, Last winter I had a simmilar run in on the Bogie. I hiked into the tall timbers hole to find a guy anchored with bait divers in the shallows right against the shore. I believe there are certain "traffic lanes" that can allow both bank fisherman and boaters to fish the same water. Had I been in my drift boat I would have parked on the other side of the river and pitched gear to the fish. I ended up trying to fish below him but only managed one fish to shore. He had managed to monopolize a hole that was traditionally a bank fishing hole. Only a few of the late arrivers said anything to the guy, probably because of the greatly dimminished access. I am embarrassed to say but when I used to fish Blue creek in the winter \:\( you often had problems when guy's had thier sleds parked in the creek. I feel very fortunate to have a drift boat at my disposal and afford all the curtacy (spelling?) to the bank guys I can because I can cover more water.

Sorry to hear about your morning. But just because you're the first one (boat) to what sounds like is one of the relatively few bank angler access sites doesn't mean there isn't room for both bank and boat. You still could occupy the #1 boat slot as other boaters would have to yield to you.

As for the bankies throwing their gear over your lines, that was wrong as long as your gear wasn't dominating the fishable area they worked hard to access and you did what you could to share the spot. I don't think boaters need to pull anchor and leave entirely, just give a few feet one way or the other because us guys on the bank don't have that same option.

You did mention respect of our water so you must understand there's a difference between where we can fish and where you (boaters) can fish. I sometimes get so excited after hiking in to an area where I round the last bend in the trail, heart racing, hoping there's room for me to make a few casts. Most guys know the rivers they fish. They know the holes, they know, for the most part, who can access what area - bank or boat. There are "traditional" spots on every river I've fished, where bankies gather and if you want to slide in before day-break and occupy one of those spots, especially where guys have traveled some distance on foot, then in my opinion, you should be prepared to be willing to pull anchor and slide a few feet one way or the other. I've fished many a hole where everybody on the bank and in a boat coordinated their casts and all got along just fine.

Just think what would happen if all us bank fishermen went out and bought us a river boat. That might give a whole new meaning to getting to the hole well before day-break!

Give a little...take a little...and there will be enough for all!

I had anchored in the fast water just above the hole and had my bait divers just over the lip. I never once pulled my anchor to work down thru the hole. I gave them the whole slot below me. It is only about a 30 second hike to the hole from the road. When I steelhead fish I give way to bank anglers all the time. This has been a real productive salmon spot for me and I will usually row down there in the dark. So lets see, I get up at 2:20, get out of the house at 3:00, drive 1 hour to the river, do a turn around, row down to the top of the hole in the dark and get set up and have someone come down 1/2 hour later and throw over my gear. If he was there first I would give him the top end. Sorry to come across negative but it just gets frustrating at times.

I bank fish. The way I see it is "first come, first serve". The river is free to all. It cracks me up when guys seem to think they can make up their own rules. If the Bankies wanted the hole so bad then they should have gotten their lazy butts outta bed earlier and been on the hole before light. The law is the law and as long as you are within it, screw these rules that some think they have the right to make. Most bankies are just jealous cuz they dont have a life to get a boat.

That hole is big enough --Huge--that it should have never been an issue.

I have had this happen, rowed down in the dark and there was a boat fishing in the hole we made tracks for. Two boats could have fished it-but we patienlty waited, a bankie came in and waited too. Finally, they got there fish and we moved down and a boat above tries to come and fish side by side with us---we had words and said that bankie has been waiting all morning and your corkin him out of the hole. They headed down river. And all was good.

I continually have this problem. I dont even try to fish the holes their in just head my boat down stream and get out of their way. 90% of the time they still have some kind of remark. I just quit worrying about it. I used to be confrontational but that just ruined my day. Lots of water to fish so I move on. I go to the river to fish and enjoy myself not fight.

I bank it on the OP a lot. This time of year here's how I would see the situation. Since you beat me to the hole. I will give you a certain amount of time to anchor up and work your baits at the head of the pool. Meanwhile I'll happily work the tailend of the hole. IMO, 20 to 25 minutes is plenty of time. Eventually though, I would want you to row through or bounce through, and either move on or walk your boat back up to make another pass. IMO, this time of year the aggressive chinook are sitting right at the head of the pourovers and pools, so I would also like a chance at presenting my gear through this same zone. After 20 or so minutes, I will ask you if you are going to work your divers through and mention I would not cast while you row through. I have encountered this situation a number of times and most of the time the boaters have caught on. On a few occasions they've actually worked on through, and 15 feet downstream got their takedown. Apparently the scour extended further back so the springers were laying deeper in the hole than they thought.

In your case, since you were in the fast water, walking your boat up the riffle probably isn't feasible. So feel free to park your boat and hit it with me from the bank with driftgear or whatever, if you still think the head has fish holding in it.

If the maggots in question walked in and started casting over your shiat right off the bat. Then they are in the wrong.

If I beat you to the hole and I am pounding the head; again, feel free to hit it from the bank with me. Or work your bait divers below me. Just don't drop your pick in the fast water and expect me to make two more casts and give up the meat. If you're willing to wait for 15 minutes anchored up (about 12 casts) and ask, I would definitely let you make a pass through the head. To be honest though this situation has never happened. This time of year most boaters see me standing at the head and drift on through.

Fishing etiquette is not so obvious to some. When I first went to a crowded river I was advised not to go upriver of someone, not to go across someone, don't go downriver, and get out of the way with anyone with a fish on. I walked into the river, many fishermen, no holes, looked at the last fisherman on the river and figured I should go past him. People were 300 yards apart but I was worried about being above anyone. I fished and found no one concerned as it wasn't a "hole". So, some are new, some are ignorant, and some are jerks. Too bad we all don't wear signs!
