Saw a pelican north of Meadow point last Saturday while out coho fishing out of Shilshole. First one I've ever seen in 25 years of Puget Sound fishing. Anyone else seeing them? How common are they here in Washington?

I've seen them regularly at the Mouth of the Columbia in the fall.

Haven't seen them in the Puget Sound, but after one of those mild winters we had a few years ago, saw lots of them out at West Port.

Who cares.... Climatic changes that bring pelicans and mackrel into Puget Sound may just bring other changes to our salmon/steelhead populations.

I saw lots of them at Neah Bay 2 weeks ago while I was there, and then saw a lone brown Pelican on the west side of Whidbey last week.

I don't recall seeing them before in Puget Sound, but until I turned 30, I was nearly as oblivious to our local bird populations as Santiago is sounds to be \:D

Ridgeway -
I care - also saw one last Saturday and Sunday at Jeff head. like you it was the first I had seen in Puget Sound in nearly 50 years of fishing the area. While they have been common on the lower Columbia for a number of years the brown pelican has only been regularly noticed locally in the last years or so (have seen white pelicans several times). I checked with some of birding friends and they report that pelcians have been seen in the last month or so from Olympia north to Smith Island.

I also agree it is just another sign that conditions are changing and likely not for the better for our local fish populations.

hey gary
i hope that was a positive tone in your humor:)

you ever notice how many possums are roadkill in the northwest?

fwiw
i never heard of a possum living wild here before the kirkland sighting
and i live on a hill above the olalla valley where they have a yearly bluegrass music festival so the banjo crack isn't entirerly untrue:)

take care and have a good day

The last time I saw brown pelicans in Puget Sound was during one of the more severe el nino events a few years back. At the same time mackerel were being routinely caught off the mouth of the Snohomish.

All in fun Fuzzy....take no offense. Your post was out there pok'n fun so I bit. I live a mile north of Lake Union and we have possum and racoon that live within a hundred yards of our house. I see them routinely. One pelican in 25 years...that's rare.

I haven't seen any brown pelicans-- they're either threatened or endangered-- but there are a gazillion white pelicans on the upper Columbia and Yakima rivers. I didn't realize they weren't common on the west side.

Seastrike...I'm 2 blocks east of you. I was out this morning. Fished Meadow, the trees and West Point to mid-channel. Caught one small coho and a half-dozen shakers. Did not see another net out all morning....not a single net! Very disappointing for mid-September and no wind for the morning. Conditions were prime. Wasn't marking many fish above 110 feet. Checker confirmed the poor fishing. Glad you caught a nice one. Any pics? We'll have to hook up some time. I'm going to Kodiak Island this next week so I'll likely get my fill of pig coho.

Strange!!!! Never seen a pelican until 4 years a go on the Yakima River. They show up when the springers do and hang around for about 6 months. We're talking about some rather large flocks. I was born here 52 yrs ago and this just started happening. The duck
