Just got back from a salmon trip yesterday it was a great day limited out on silvers and decided to try for some "cowboys" AKA KINGS ;\) We probably had 15 take downs but only landed 5 I can't deal with that ratio. We tried just a trailer treble, double treble, I am stumped. I would've thought it was just one of those days, but I had similar problems last week. Its still fun to see the rods bury 5 times in every plug slot Any tips

Nothing!

Sounds like a perfectly good Kwikfish. I'd be more worried about the hooks.

sharpening hooks

That aside, even with extremely sharp hooks, I too struggle with what I feel is an unacceptably low strike to hook-up ratio on Kwiks.... Oh well, thats fishing. Doesn't exactly help that I use only one single point hook the vast majority of the time. Tried the new Gami 510 that is being advertised as the definitive replacement hook for Kwiks this past summer on the Kenai. I fared no better with them than I did with my standard single siwash. Maybe that bead chain suggestion has some merit since the 510's have an almost non-existent shank.

Wait longer before you set the hook. The most commone problem is not waiting long enough, not the hooks.

How does a fish bury a rod tip under water to the point the rod can barely be freed from the rod holder by a Conan the Barbarian type, only to come free moments later? That is David Copperfield stuff (as Larry the cable guy says).

It seems fish bite down on plugs with such force that it is difficult to slip the plug in it's mouth durring the hook-set. Treb's, particulaly doubles, offer alot of resistance to point penitration. In fact you can divide the given force upon hook-set by the number of points making contact with the fish. The more points, the less force, and if at least one point doesn't penitrate beyond the barb.............bye bye.

barb? what barb?
seriously take a toothpick and aim it at your monitor with 3/4's of it inside your mouth pinched between your incisors
now hold tension on it towards your monitor while emulating headshakes and feel how the inserted toothpick flops about
now picture a #22 hook attached to the inserted end of the toothpick
the odds of that hooking anything is about 20% eh?

now if you look at the size of a chinooks mouth?
or the hardness of said mouth? sharp hooks theory becomes real apparent while large hook theory gains merit

if you compare treble versus single siwash per penatration/grip per size used and note that a similar sized siwash out performs trebles?
and also that if you test sharpness by dulling your hook by testing in your fingernail?
then maybe?
you might also consider using a k-16 with a single forward mounted 5/0 (owner, gammy, vmc, etc) siwash attached to a bead chain long enugh to reduce the torque incurred while the (chinook) rolls it's head in a vain attempt to discard said lure from it's face:)

or?

there is a town halfway between tacoma and olympia named DuPont
in this small burb is a certain resident that cavorts to sportsmen with custum spinners correctly named for his hometown:)

Went to a seminar on springers at the sportsman show in Puyallup. The presenter (can't remember his name) demonstrated his setup for kwik-fish. He replaced the forward treble hook with a siwash with a #5 berkley barrel swivel. The back hook remained a treble but a #5 swivel was also added. the treble hook loop had to be cut and bent out to attach to the swivel (siwash style) but it is not difficult except those trebles that come with the kwik-fish are extremely hard and you really need a good set of sidecutters to clip them. If you switch to Gami's they clip easier. He explained that what this does is allow the fish to head shake and roll without prying against the body of the kwik-fish and potentially prying the hookset right out of his mouth.

Try pulling out the eye on the belly, then put a size 5 barrell swivel on,Close eye tightly.Put a size 5/0 siwash on.Then repeat with the butt end. This time put a heavy duty split ring on the swivel then a 1/0 or 2/0 owner treble on the other end of the split ring.I've tried the above mentioned method by cutting part of the treble hook loop and yes the gammi's work good for this as the other brands are a little more bridle and won't work as well.I have a hard time fishing with defective hooks. That's why I use the split ring and it also makes for much quicker hook changes when destroyed by large nook's after a few or the net play's a part in this hook damage also.Good luck,

Yeah, what strike zone said. Guess I should have been a little more detailed on the hook set up and bending the eyes out to install the barrel swivels then attaching the hooks to the swivel. But that is the set up.

Hate to ask, but did you let the fish turn before you set the hook. Gotta wait wait wait.

Tight lines

I don't set until the rod is barried and peeling line out with a tight drag, then I drill it home.It does take alot of discipline.Like mentioned above.Good luck,

Thanks for all the advice.

BTW we let em take it till the pole started making funny noises so I know that was'nt it.

It must just be that kwikies hook up ratio in general sucks, We'll put on a couple of magnum wiggle warts and hook up 90% go figure!

I use the same setup at Larry b. The chain and single hooks help reduce the leverage that a fish can generate against the quickfish/treble hooks. The chain gets the hook away from the body of the plug. I think the leverage problem is the main reason for poor success ratio on quickfish. Smaller plugs=less leverage, and less to get in the way of the hook as well.

the real reason that you had so many missed takedowns is that hens are about 10 times less likely to hook up as bucks. the bucks mouths are bigger and shaped different than the hens. on days that we have 100 % hookups they are usually all bucks.
