Hey everyone,

I'm coming up from texas for vaction and am satying on case inlet. The house we rented is on stretch island. I've gone salmon fishing in alaska but that was on a river. The house we are renting is on the beach and i was looking for some fishing to do.
i have a 7/8 weight fly rod and i might have some type of spinning tackle but it wont be very heavy action. I also plan on doing some river fishing for rainbows. I dont have a pair of waders yet but i may buy some. but in the case that i dont, i will still fish from the bank.
I saw that the salmon numbers are way down so i dont know that i will be going after them. But, i would still like to try. Also, are there any steelhead in the rivers or bays?
What flies and lures are producing for salmon/trout/steelhead?

thanks for the help,
JC

J.C.,

There ought to be some resident silvers around and possibly searun cutthroat (remember cutthroat must be released in Washington salt water), but it can be a fun C&R experience.

We have done well with Silvers using small leadhead jigs with flashabou from the shoreline fishing Widbey Island, it ought to work in Case Inlet too. Fly fishing for cutts and silvers is

Have a great vacation.

Try fishing the northern tip of Harstein Island just south of Stretch Island (about a 5 minute boat ride). Also try the mouth of Vaughn Bay (across case inlet to the east of stretch) south to the first point (about one mile)on an incoming time in the evening. I grew up fishing the area as a kid out of a 12' aluminum boat. The mouth (outside) of vaughn bay was productive for me trolling a chrome mcmahon spoon or chrome/blue dot Pt Defiance (#4 both spoons) with 4 oz of lead. Bait can be found a some grocery stores in the area (frozen)...have fun.

Good thing I read your post well.....about the whole beach/fly fishing thing.....sorry.

A blue/white anchovy special (size 2 or 4) with a sink tip line and 6' of 12 lb leader should do the trick.... some epoxy bait fish flies will work too. In the summer the tides will produce some good water movement close to shore on either side of a point and the water will be a bit deeper...cast and swing the fly ... a moderate retrieve should elicit a silver strike...

If you are coming in August, the skokomish will be open for one king. Its a bit of a drive, but not too far, maybe a half hour or so. Probably not much in it till the middle of the month I would think. Others would know more. Hoodsport has pinks and kings, depending on the time span. Its not too far either, about 15 minutes further. Both of these will be crowded beyond belief though, so you might get out a map and consider running up to the wynochee for summer steelhead one day. Agian, others could advise you better on the specifics. Good luck.
