Filed months ago and still no permit in hand. The department seems to be jerking us around. This thing could get ugly.

Why would this be any different than the usual? Usually when theres jerking to be done, I prefer it from a female, not a state agency, but I'm getting used to the latter...

I read on another BB that the derby was discussed at the Feb. 1 meeting of the Steelhead Cutthroat Advisory Committee to WDFW. A large majority voted to recommend that Director Koenings deny the permit. Why he would do so when WDFW has determined there are harvestable wild steelhead on 10 OP rivers, including the ones central to the derby, would leave him in the realm of arbitrary and capricious decision making.

If they deny us a permit I can guarantee a law suit will follow siting "arbitrary and capricious decision making." They gave G.I Joe's their permit, why not us?

As long as my license is valid I still plan on some late March O P river fishing.

Don't sweat it, dude. We're going to have a "get-together" one way or another. Whether or not it is a permited tournament in which money changes hands, or a lets a go fishing and see who can catch the biggest fish in which no money changes hands remains to be seen.

Either way, my buddy Craig and I will be there. Egg Cure in hand!

What do you think the department will say when King 5 investigators approach them and ask them why they are discriminating against a bunch of Sportmen raising money for enhancement.

I heard the same thing from a guy who was at that meeting. I have a hard believing that they won't give you a permit though. I bet they will come through any day now. I won't be able to fish in the Derby, but good luck man.

Here's an interesting email an undisclosed recipient forwarded to me:

"Hey Guys,
I got a really cool phone call tonight from a concerned legislator, he has been following the thread on the tourney and is concerned the department is not making wise decisions and that he feels that there would be a huge up rising if they do not follow there own rules and procedures. What he told me is since he sits on the committee which holds there purse strings is that he is going to ask them if they have issued us our permit and if not why, then mention to them that it would be in there best interest to do so. He is a good dude and a avid sportsman himself. It will be interesting to see what happens, I guess we will know in a day or too."

Funny, I haven't heard any whining from some of these folks about the $100 head whack 'em and stack 'em tourney they had here on Thurs & Fri (and the guides that particpated in that), nor the one that the PA steelhead club has always had, also not C&R???

Really Bob, I wonder why there is no uproar over those ones, can you get us more info on those?

Just got off the phone with the WDFW. Here's the deal, folks. They have issued us a permit for the tournament with the provission that we "DO NO MEASURE FISH." We could kill them, but we cannot measure them. Does that not make sence to anyone but me?

Anyway, we "WILL BE" allowed to take a photograph, so here's my plan. Fly and I have to issue a sticker of some sort to everyone at morning registration which must appear in the photgraph to prove they caught the fish on the day of the tournament. We will hence forth, install the sticker/stickers on your rod/rods at some increment, say 36 inches, so we have some sort of a benchmark for judging fish size. I understand this leaves alot up to photographic interpertaion, but it's all we can do.

More info will be forthcoming a week or two before the event.
