have you tried small candlefish type patterns? dont know on the tides as it is a fishery i havent explored much. would assume as a standard rule 2hrs on each side of a change

fish when they are there... as stupid as it sounds, thats what i do. If i dont see jumping pods of fish then i dont usually spend muh time. A chartruese shrimp or an olive/white clouser are probably the two flies i fish the most. See one jump and cast to the swirl.
remember that salmon season is not open in area 10.

They are jumping but I cant see them to tell if they are traveling in schools or not, the only fish I've caught has been on a all silver clouser, mabye Im just not using the right fly or there is not as many fish as I thought were there.

how many are jumping? like 1 or 10?

i dont bother blind casting to residents. just cast to the swirls and you will catch fish. doesnt really matter what you throw at them.

I'd say that one fish jumps every 3-7min in different areas. Its not like they are all balled up feeding on one little pods of bait, there is TONS of baby herring swimming around and the chum fry should be coming out of the litle local crick.

yeah thats resident fishing for you. its tough because they move in those pods. one second they will be in front of you and next they are 200yards down the beach. very tough to chase them.
in situations like that i might make only 5 or 10 casts in a half hour as i chase the schools up and down the beach.
maybe i will see you out there. we have been chasing the cuts and with the push of chum fry coming it will only get better.

Is it good to get your fly down a few ft or can it be a couple inches below the surface, I have floating line so I add a splitshot to get it down but the little weight makes it a lot harder for me to cast. Is the weight nesessary for 6-8ft of water?

dont bother.
I fish a floating line exclusively in the salt and unless i am out of neah bay fishing for rockfish or lingcod. I fish clousers a lot but they dont get down much. These fish are predators and when they see something that they want, they come and get it. in 6-8 feet of water they will have no problem seeing your fly.
You should also try fishing surface flies later in the year for cutties. I love fishing little sliders or poppers. lots of fun to watch the take... especially when you get into some big cohos.

Would that be like a muddler minnow or a little crappie popper?

i'll post some pictures when i have a chance... but if you tie your own... it would be like a muddler, except white and with a lot more spun hair on the front... Like a deciever with a spun deer hair head...
or you can take a Rainy's Pee-Wee pop and slide it on your leader infront of a baitfish pattern and that will suffice too if you dont want to tie a fly that incorporates the foam head.

Do a search on the web for the Miyawaki Beach Popper; Jack Gartside's Gurgler is also a favorite surface pattern. These surface patterns are great for searching, if there are fish (coho or sea-run cutthroat) around they'll usually show themselves by at least making a pass at it.

While resident coho feed heavily on baitfish, they also eat large numbers of amphipods (a tiny relative of the sand flea) and euphausids (a small shrimp-like invertrbrate; krill) and simple imitations of these will often be effective when the fish show no interest in baitfish patterns.

Try a small Krile pattern that is wrapped with crystal flash and get it as far away from the boat as possible. I have used my oars and just put the fly rod under my foot and let out about 50 yards of line and then pump the oars a couple times, coast for a second or two and then push on the oars once, repeat this operation. Those Res will come once the pattern is far enough away from the boat.
