Another question about polorized glasses for those in the know. Which color lenses are best for reading water and spotting fish? I have always been partial to amber but was wondering if that is the best option.-T

Amber is the best. I need to get me a new pair since I've gone to contact lenses. I hate wearing the fitovers over glasses. Any suggestions?

I got the photochromic copper lenses on my Smith/AO's dont know if that is the same as amber but close anyway...think it depends on the type of water/sunlight etc...I would love to have a pair of easily changeable tints depending on where I am/weather that particular day as I have heard many diff opinions on this subject depending on the variables.

Amber is good. I like the rose colored lenses of my Maui Jims; sorta' the way I like to look at life and fishing.

My personal recommendation as well.

This color accentuates reds and greens, but mutes the blues. Significantly enhances contrast. Great for spotting fish in the water. Amazing sunsets when viewed thru these lenses.

I have both the Photochromic Brown & Amber from Action optics. Around here, I like the Amber. When chasing saltwater fish in the Caribbean & Mexico, I wear the brown. I just like the darker lens in the areas with really intense sunshine.

Brown or Copper Action Optics. Been using them for years.

IMO there is no 'one size fits all' in terms of lens color. It will vary depending on available light. For instance: a brown lens works well in bright sunlight when it's clear, but in bright overcast conditions a copper, rose, green or light gray lens is much better. I know my brown lenses make thing seem very "flat" in overcast conditions. I also think that more so than color, the amount of tint plays a major part.

BTW...I'm curious how many of you sight fish for steelhead anyway

They never made an "amber" lens, but they did have one called "Clearwater Copper" up until this past summer. That was a photochromic lens (goes lighter or darker depending on how bright the conditions are)... they would start out as a light Serengetti rose-brown hue but eventually darken to a very dark copper-brown hue. This is the lens I have worn for the past 4 years, and I have them mounted in the Cayman frame... wide enough to fit my 5 mega-ton head.

I inadvertently left them at the hospital one day last summer, and they sort of disappeared for 2 weeks. I ordered a replacement pair with the exact same Clearwater Copper lenses, and 2 days after the replacement pair arrived in the mail, the old ones showed up in the operating room.

So now I have an extra pair in case of emergency. Sure glad I got the Clearwater Coppers before they were discontinued. The photochromic brown is probably the closest thing they have now.

Actually, they did. It was called Freshwater Amber. I have the Locsha style in both the Amber and Photochromic brown.

amber works best in overcast/low light conditions, which is most of the time here.

I go through about 6 pairs of $19.99 Calcutta's a year. The Angler Eyes are decent as well. Good (expensive) shades are too much of a bummer when they break.

For fishing I have to throw in one more vote for the brown/amber/copper variety.

I was involved in a mishap back when serving in the military that effected my sensitivity to light. Now I use the grey lenses in the bright summertime, copper/rose for clearwater fishing in the winter, most of the time I'm wearing the yellow ( Smith - Guide's Choice) on overcast days. :two cents:

I like the Brighter Yellow lenses on a dark stormy day. They work great for seeing fish.
