We have had some excellent crab from Safeway. Smoking deal 2.99 lb for Dungies. Picked up four more today that are 2.2 pound or bigger. Just thought I would pass this along.

07. I grew up on Puget sound and have been eating local Dungies for 35 years. The last three times we have bought from the Factoria Safeway, you could not have told the difference if you caught them and cooked them yourself. Sometimes you can get burned I know....I always tell them that I will return them if their not fresh.

If you have eyes and half a brain you can easily tell a fresh quality crab from an old one...Later

The only time I've gotten bad crab was for some King Crab bought at Whole Paycheck in Bellevue. Cracked it open and got a cloud of ammonia.

The price is probably a sign of a good commercial season. I think they might be crabbing of the coasts right now so they should be fresh. I don't think the tribes off the coasts do as much crabbing as the hood canal and north sound tribes do. Maybe a buyer can tell us where these are coming from and when to avoid the store bought ones.

That's a good price. I haven't bought much crab. Can you tell fresh crab like you do for fish by giving it the sniff test?

According to friends who are crabbing off the coast the boats are still looking for the hot spots. 20 foot swells have kept most guys off the water until this week. The price is 2.50 a pound at the fish houses. It is not impossble to but good crab from a supermarket. Even a blind pig gets an acorn once in a while.

Thanks for the very helpful and encouraging advice Jake...

I have seen store crab and fish and am usually not impressed to the point of buying it....
Like I said before, I'll pass, and it shouldn't matter to you whether or not I buy store crab...

I'm surprised people are being so receptive to the idea of buying commercially caught seafood. Remember this thread the next time sport crab seasons are butchered and our limits are reduced.

Its legal for you to go out and Take your boat out off of the coast and drop your pots. Best crabbing is in about 40 fathoms right now. Good luck.

Actually the non-tribal commercial guys have been fishing pots since 12-26-07. I think the first pull was 12-30-07. The storms have been limiting the catch so far, as most boats haven't been getting out except for a few 12 hour windows. This week with 8-9 foot swells, they'll be out in force. Look for prices to drop or stay steady.

I do get a few crab from these guys, mostly clients who own crab boats. The competition for crab off of the coast is between tribal/non-tribal. Sport participation is almost nil out there. Puget Sound is another matter all together.
