Have had great success with sculpin patterns though I must say I have done better on wild fish than hatchery fish. A favorite sculpin pattern (similar to youors) has accounted for 4 of the 5 of my largest steelhead.

Thanks for the info. What rivers do you predominatly fish? I see you live in marysville. You talking Stilly? Skag? I have yet to tie one this year for steel. Do you strip retreive? Or just swing them? Thanks, BCB

BCB- It has been my experience that sculpin pattens are effective on most rivers. Have to say that I have caught steelhead on them on every river that I have fished them. Are they better than other steelhead patterns? I don't think so; as mentioned one can catch a steelhead on virtually anything you want to tie on. I just like the looks of them and fish them with confidence which ultimately is the bottom line for steelhead success.
Have had succes with them both on the strip and on the swing. And as mentioned have take hatchery and wild fish as well as summer and winter steelhead and chums, coho, sea-runs, bull trout, Chinook, pinks, rainbows and even whitefish on them.
  Tight lines Curt

I've had great success with the good 'ol school muddler minnow on the Clackamas for summer runs when I lived in PDX

Why..? curious. Curious why? Is there something to that us 15 year rook's don't know? I get asked this often… Just my personal preference. Besides there’s something about a fly tied traditional that I find appealing...in today's modern era of flash.......IMO Mf
