A buddy of my invited me to go on a trip to Rivers Inlet with a group of people. The time frame is August 3-10th. Most people have told me the fishing has not been that great the last couple of years. Just trying to figure out if it is worth it or not to go. If anyone is willing to share information about Rivers Inlet that would be great.

No cost would be split three ways and be taking my boat. My buddy said there will be a 70 ft yacht for us to stay on up there. Three boats will be running across from Port Hardy as a group over to Rivers inlet with the yacht being used as the "home base"

The cost is not really the issue but using up my few vacation days is the problem.

A local business owner here on Bainbridge caught an 81 pounder there in August last year. It may not be what it once was but it is one of the Holy Grails for saltwater big king fishing. I would go.

Sounds like a good time to use them.

How far of a run is that?

About 60 miles from Port Hardy to Rivers. Mostly open water.

Sounds like a hell of a fun boat ride and I've always wanted to make that trip in my boat. That said I've fished a couple lodges in Rivers Inlet and will never go back again. Many days with no fish, but when you do hook into one it can be a good one. From my perspective thier is a lot of better water to fish that you are going to be going past. Just my 2 cents. Sounds like a great trip, I would go for it and budget enough time to fish some other spots.

1 thing I've learned from spending 20 years fishing S.E. Ak. is, what happened last year means nothing as to what is going to happen this year, don't base your decision on last years results. Sounds like fun, I'd be all over it!

A trip like that is more about the people you are with. My Dad loved that trip and did it about three times with the same group of guys. Fishing was never on fire but he always enjoyed it. Take some crab gear, some Jimmy Buffet and plenty of quality cocktails. If you just want a bunch of fish head out to the slums of Neah Bay. But I think hangin on a 70 footer in protected waters smokin a good cigar with a large cocktail in my other hand wouldn't suck. I'll think about ya while I'm hangin out up by Neah. Lifes full of tuff choices. I must have fish catching trips and try to do it with a few extended weekends. If I am taking a vacation I wouldn't want catching fish to make or brake it for me although they can be one hell of a bonus. Have fun and post Pics...

I have fished Rivers several times. I concur that Rovers can be fun IF you keep your expectations realistic. You will not hook big numbers of fish. In fact you should expect some fishless days, but when you do hook up it might be the fish of a lifetime.

I am going up there this year in early September. They usually have a great run of BIG silvers.

I go up there every other year, in aug usually do very well, the big thing up there is what part of rivers are you fishing if Im not mistaken its about 40 miles long. I ve had some good days around the mouth fishn the wall and a couple of other places. but my best days have been all the way in. The only bad days weve had are when the killer whales come in . and the fishing just goes dead for a couple of days, and i mean dead.

Sounds exactly like another well known BIG FISH destination I'm familiar with.

We did the small boat (18 to 22 feet) from Hardy to Rivers 8 times in the 70's & 80's. Early on just trailering past Campbell river was an adventure. No radar, no GPS, did have a Loran C unit the last few trips. Slept under tarps, ate a lot of cold canned food, begged warm showers from the lodges, etc. Caught a lot of really nice fish. Of course there wasn't a lot else to do but fish. Lodges were really good about taking care of our fish. Had more than a couple white knuckle trips back over the open water. Was always glad to see Gods Pocket.

All I can say and I know boy's,is that River's is not what it used to be...
I won't discourage anyone from going if they choose but their are plenty of other spots in BC to catch decent fish in better numbers.
It's all about what your looking for in a fishing vacation....
Do your research!!!!
