does anyone know where i can find a selection of discontinued gloomis blanks? ive search ebay but didnt really find anything

a friend has an 11'4" 4-8 or 4-10 gl3 factory rod. its a sweet feeling rod and i would love to find that blank.

also im looking for some of the old 13' loomis noodle rod blanks. a different guy i know has 5 or 6 of them between 11'6" and 13' they are all gl3, im6, or imx blanks.

They did away with those rods so they can charge you $600 for a GLX floatrod now. For $600 you get a nice blank with a Tennessee handle, no hook keeper, and guides that groove. It would be nice if they still offered a selection of blanks that people would actually buy.

the problem they have with selling blanks is that people were getting away with building them for a lot less than the ridiculous prices they want for their finished rods. still, if you like that floppy noodle action you get with a GL2, you can build one with identical components as a factory rod and save around $50 by doing it yourself.

the bass guys have it better, a much wider selection of blanks. steelhead guys get a weird mixed bag with few choices.

well i fish a 11'6" gl2 noodle rod right now. but gl2's are crap imho. mine is alot older though when they were matte blue blanks.

G loomis would make alot of money if they had the option to buy thier blanks...and not just a select few. thier select blows.

but i sure wish i could find somewhere to buy a 13' gl3, im6, or imx blank

I really dont see anything wrong with selling a full line-up of blanks. If someone else wants to tie the rod, and loomis doesn't have to pay out labor on the rods, whats the big deal.

exactly.

they would make alot more money if they sold all the blanks.

i know i would own quite a few of the float rods if i could build them the way i want.

it may boil down to warantee. loomis only wants to warant what goes out the door premade.

I'm pretty sure they just love the huge mark-up they get on those rods.

Fortunately there are enough manufacturers making enough different rod blanks that an angler can find whatever he wants, and usually at several price points. I'd be surprised if you can't find a rod that fills your needs other than that GL3 factory rod. Vote with your wallet and support rod makers who provide what you want.

While I really do like my existing IMX rods, I just voted with my wallet for two new Sage drifting rods.

Ordered a sage last week! Sage rods are very comparable to Gloomis. Also, got to love the rainshadows.

Sage hit a home run with several of their gear rods.... A few of them though, not so much.... Maybe a single at best.
The ones they did right though, kick the crap out of any gloomis I have fished. Their warranty is second to none.

sage build a great rod second to none, only down side when you get into the longer rods they tend to be a little heavier than loomis. If your looking for loomis blanks call some of the local builders. some will sell blanks you might get lucky. As for comparing different rods, its all a matter of preference, some love loomis, or lamie, sage, rainshadow, ect for me its what feels good in my hands, and can I cast it all day without getting tired. do to rods to heavy....

bankwalker,
Feel your pain...just missed out on a 13' GL3 on another board last week. If you keep an eye on the classifieds of some of the Great Lakes boards you can find some turn up ....ff.net, steelheadsite, questoutdoors. With all the wierd warrenty stuff going on with these old blanks more than a few guys are getting rid of thiers. Many are custom jobs.

For what its worth I'm a big fan of the lamiglas 13' cp rod.

loomis blanks are the most crooked blanks i have ever seen, i would never build one. Sage rods are nice, but way overpriced.....its just graphite, no different then any other manufacturer.

You have to watch out for loomis blanks, they've been known to sell factory seconds with flaws, dont buy one with only a 1 year warrenty. fell into that trap a while back. Dont get me wrong I love loomis rods I have 5 of them, as well as 4 sages and 4 rainshadows, I'm a rod junkie. no lammies I always break them for some reason...
