I'm off to steelhead camp on the Skagit, but before I take off here's the skinny for Saturday's Outdoor Line show on 710 ESPN Seattle: The Listener Line is Open! Do you have a question for one of our guests or have a hot report? Call 866-979-ESPN and fire away! Here's a quick run down of what we have in store for the Outdoor Line this coming weekend: Keith Colburn, captain of the "Wizard" on Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch", will be in the studio from 7:25 to 8:00 a.m. discussing the ups and downs of working in the most dangerous outdoor occupation on earth! Gary Stiles from Northwest Bass (nwbass.net) will talk about the expansion of the bass industry in the Pacific Northwest and the great fishing that's in store in the next couple of weeks. All around funny guy Glenn Hall from the outdoor television show "Hawg Quest" will give listeners a run down of upcoming episodes. Curt Kraemer looks into his crystal ball to see if the current Big C springer run might be an indicator for other salmon and steelhead runs headed our way. Polish up that crystall ball Curt Mad shrimp scientist Tom Pollock will hammer out some guidelines to put more shrimp in your pots during the upcoming season, as well as places to go in the Puget Sound. Ed Wickersham from the Coastal Conservation Association will give listeners an overview of the CCA's plan to place artificial reef systems in Puget Sound in an effort to help restore depleted groundfish populations. Call 866-979-ESPN with questions or comments! Give us a call...the listener line is OPEN!

Well, I crackered off the only opportunity we had all day. Had Stam not seen the fish flash right next to the boat I'd have been able to play it off as bottom. No such luck!
Good times up there with the entire cast of cartoon characters!

Do you think that slime that's coating the bottom of the Skagit from Marblemount to Rockport is affecting the fishing this year Rob? It sure makes it tough to side drift or swing spoons.
We've been hopin' it's that and not another gross overestimation of this year's 8000 fish run... which just doesn't seem to have materialized.

There just aren't the numbers of fish around that there should be. Not just on the Skagit, but throughout the entire system. No bueno!

Good times up there with the entire cast of cartoon characters! If I ate the right stuff I used to see flashes back in the late 1960's.

Those guys have agood thing goin up there. Stopped by last week after fishing to chat and they were having a good time. The estimates do seem off a bit, it has been a lot work to get fish up there this season.

The Skagit is going the way of the Sky, Nook, Green and Stilly regarding its wild steelhead...it is sad what is going on up there as I just spent 5 days on the water to witness it firsthand. Once again, another great run "prediction" that errs towards optimism via bad formulas rather than reality... Cant wait to hear the reasons why: "They are late" "Ocean Survival" "Computers screwed up run size data and added one too many zeros" "Dog ate all the smolts"...

To be honest I its been a great year for me... I understand about the numbers but, I believe that those numbers are there or are just short. Just think about the spring time, it is now actually beginning to be spring. We have not had very many raises in river height this year until the last couple of weeks.
I really do believe that the numbers are close, and they will continue to trickle in throughout may.

How long have you been fishing the Skagit system Okie?
Sure there are some fish around and you may have had a decent season this year... but believe me, we ain't fishing on an 8000 fish return like was predicted. 2 years ago if you didn't get 5 or 6 hookups or grabs a trip something was wrong and that was a year that was supposedly just barely gonna meet escapement. This year has been scratch fishing at best on both the Sauk and Skagit.
Bottom line for me... if robbo and some of the other guys camped up there are gettin' skunked during the week in mid April... something is DEFINITELY wrong.

4salt-
How long have i been fishing the Skagit system... would a number of years justify the success of my season to you? I know every square inch of that fishery, and for you to call me out about my season is B.S.....
Bottom line, for you is an opinion... it doesnt even sound like you are hitting the river up enough to make your own opinions. You have to go off of Robs' opinion as well as others who are camped up that way.

it appears slower than if there actually were 8k or so of fish finning around. All 8K of those fish wouldn't be in the system now, or at the time you fished it. So, it's no surprise to me that you didn't see 8K steelhead in the Skagit/Sauk when you were up there. You are having Situk flashbacks my friend, if you were thinking of fishing over 8K steelhead! Sorry. Couldn't help swinging at that fat one, too.
