My post about the downrigger clips got me thinking about picking up a few more lures to drag behind the boat this upcoming King Season. Just curious to see what everyones faves are for fishing Puget Sound. If I only had 2 to use this season due to the abundance of 5 to 6 inch herring I would use the cop car tomic spoon with the prism tape straight off the rigger with no flasher, and the old standby green spatterback hootchie with a mylar insert behind a green 11 inch hot spot flasher. What are your faves?

coho killer rigged with a split ring/barrel swivel/rvrfshr siwash.
Standard hoochie setup would be #2.
#3 would be a Funky Chicken spoon no flasher.
Also like cutplug no flasher or a whole herring toothpicked behind an Abe and Al.
So there's five. Like em all.

I had a crappy king season last year but the "go to" was not what you are mentioning Chuck.
A couple of guys hammered em up north with something different.
I do like the Ace Hi's though....not crap talking those.

I fish 5 setups.
Silver Horde Coho Killer or Sonic Edge Spoons (mostly in the outer sound) CK Colors are White Lightning, Army truck, Sonic's in UV purple or green.
Hoochie and a herring strip (primarily in EB and other terminal fisheries..) Hoochie colors are Purple Haze, Aurora, green splatterback, or all glow with green stripe.
Ace-Hi's in white or green splatter back
Cut plug straight off the dr with only a bead chain, anywhere.
& Plugs, I only fish all glow with a green stripe.

What about the "mreyns special"

Coyote spoon in Funky Chicken.

That color sure produces well for BIG river kings as well.

I've successfully fished Apex lures for kings, but strangely had no luck here. All much fish came from BC on trips up near Campbell River and farther north.

Nothing like the motor mooched plug cut herring for kings... No flasher, just plain, unadulterated, slow trolled herring.

agree on the apexes, never had any luck on them in Puget Sound but they work great off the west coast of Vancouver Island. Makes no sense to me since they are the same runs of fish.

the old stand by, green/white coho killer
new stand by, purple haze hoochie behind a purple haze uv flasher
secret weapons, ace hi behind a uv flasher with a red stripe and a uv coho killer in white with the white (i think its called plaid) uv flasher.

All of the above smeared with some sort of stinky stuff you can't get off your hands before you get home.

Tough to outgun the Hoonah Slow Roll, with the toothpick retaining the subtle bend. A broken tail don't seem to hurt.

I used to use a Rhys Davis helmet, but went to a FBR. Is that a lure?

Other than that, I troll the 3.5 version old school Coyote spoons in the Wonder Bread and glow/green. Recently converted to the Tomic 3.5 glow 603 or glow 530 to get a better paint job and better hooks than the newer versions of the LJ .
Next year I'll certainly be trying out some of the Tomic, glow 512 spoons come blackmouth.

We used to troll a cutplug stick of non-salted butter on a triple hook set up with a toothpick in the front to hold it... Make sure to keep the the stick-o-butter on ice prior to fishing, the bait has it's best results in water temps around 50 degrees so the meltoff isn't too quick.

When they bite it, make sure to let them take it good. Once they get the mouthful of butter you don't want to set the hook too soon as the hooks could slip out of their mouth...

Killer bait, really.......

Green label herring
Green glow/white 3.5" Coyote spoon
Gold Star # 142R squid/candle fish with a twinkle skirt inside.
