Stick,

You come across many banded birds up there?

The most banded birds I've ever caught in a single frame was (6) and I thought that rather unique.

It was a gaggle of Brant working a tideflat on The Slope.

That a Tundra or Trumpeter?

Trumpeter Swan...they're lunker doobies and flash less yellow on the snout.

The Queen's still got her claws in me,so pixels is few and far. Things should swing back my way tomorrow night.

You sure.... Although a very educated man I was testing a little bird knowledge.... Took some birding classes in college.

That there is a Tundra Swan and ironically you pictured one of a flock that's been pictured before.... I did a bit of studying those birds as I always confused the ones we had in our area...

The Tundra Swans were banded on Alaska's North Slope in the Conoco Phillips Oil Fields.

I must add your photo of that bird is a great one and admire your canning ability to capture all the photos you do!

You sure? blush

Although I made it through a few birding classes in college, I never did get through the reading ones.... thumbs

Perhaps the "blue collar" is a bit ironic? Typically when they band geese, pending the year they'll use color coded neck collars...

Bill Color

Trumpeter - black bill with red border on lower mandible; the red border may be present on some tundras.

Tundra - black bill, usually with yellow spot of varying size in front of eye; this spot may be absent on some tundras

I was under the impression that the Trumpeter had fleeing traces of yeller, while the Tundra was emblazoned richly. Their range overlap falling into the fray. I'd be curious to learn more in regards to the banding efforts,as Waterfowl sorta intrigues me,especially with scattergun in hand.(grin)

The Queen is yet unrelentless, though I think I have her by the short hairs now,so hope to bang some frames tonight. Suffered a gourmet BBQ yesterday of the Red,White & Blue variety and it was quite a spread given the logistics. Really shoulda taken pictures of that.

The fireworks display was modest in comparison and I only had 10 minutes to shoot, prior to hitting the barn:

Here's the full frame, compressed horribly to fit here, then a crop out of the lower right corner,as an inkling(despite it being out of focus, due to the thrust being elsewhere on the victims).

Compression is killing me...softly.(grin)

Check this link out... Some viable information and you can contact one of the two guys involved in the neck banding program...
