I was shucking focal length increases(100-400 L),dialing aperture corrections and gunning AI Servo back button focus and did him fairly proud overall on the pass. Depth of field could have been greater in the frame you mention, but I happen to like how crisp the victim is,with the balance of the body somewhat fleeting in it's focus.
Had a few other frames captured as he quartered away to his portside, where you can see a fair portion of his head above the wingbeat, though in actuality I prefer the pic illustrated. Nice light and 6fps+ of frame rate can be very handy in revealing nuances.
As I jumped out of the driver's seat, grabbed my camera from the dash of the boat and tore the lens cover off,I was pretty late to the party. My Dad certainly must have scored mightily with his 5D Mk II and the 70-200L IS F/2.8 he had bolted aboard at the time, though my frame rate trumps his. Would have loved to been on the backdeck, seen him approaching and shot with more thought/preparation. Can't bitch, but given the Air Show,I would have liked to have gotten it all. Beggars can't be choosers, but it still stings a smidge.
I really should be gunning my 1Ds harder,as it yields a pleasing overall warmth IMHO. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.(grin)

The bird in question was a dozen-ish miles North of Granite. As per my observations,Granite is a better place to get pics of Sealions than Iggles.
Winter is the time to really focus on Iggles, because they've fewer food options and miss no details. Summer is hit & miss, early Fall a sure thing,as the Cat Food runs are purged and all scavengers rejoice in the abundance of same.
IMHO,winter lighting is typically superior as well, beings it's less harsh on the average.

Kinda/sorta on the Iggle locale.
I've zero qualm in commencing a quality drunk and I'd like to think I'm on my way to same. Though phone calls, visitors and the like...curtail the pouring.
Somewhat.(grin)

Shy of Awesome IMHO,though there's some fair representation(s) illustrated.

The picture that I really liked was the one with the close up of the herring jumping out of the water.

Way off topic but..... Just check out this ultra-crisp fish pic & the Kodachrome 25-like color saturation. c/22

KILLER pic. A pard has what I think is the greatest Fishing Pic ever, which involves his Grandpa and a Kenai Rainbow...I'll try to get a locate and hang it up. Work has me slammed, but I've managed a few frames. Missed an opportunity at a BEEG Polar Bear the other day and couldn't chase his way. Still bummed.

Very young Swan,young-ish Artic Fox and a fairly solid Bull MuskOx.
Saw a herd of 19 '0x yesterday...the best count I've seen. Bears haven't hammered the calves.
Yet.

There was some wind and rain involved, though suprisingly nice lighting was going on. 1/3200 shutter speed didn't freeze his convictions and you simply gotta admire that.
I think it will make a rather nice print.
