Any advice available on a do it yourself float trip here? Thinking of packing up for a few days next week and giving this one a shot with some drys...counts seem to look ok;)

Haven't done it in ages, but the lower float from Mack's Canyon to the mouth is a nice 3 or 4 day trip. One class IV as I recall, scout from the right bank. I've got the Deschutes Handbook if you want the particulars about it.

A friend has been doing OK, fishing from sunrise to about 9, snooze all day, then fishing again from 6 until dusk.

When I lived down there this was always my least favorite time of year to fish the "d". The water temps in the lower river just get too warm. While there are fish to be caught and the temps usually cool to a reasonable 60-63 degs in the am the pm temps are usually 67-70ish which brings up the guilt that I maybe harming a wild fish. That said you can fish steelies in the am and swing soft hackles for trout in the pm.

Of course this depends on the day time temps.

Might be waiting till Sept as the reality of needing to work is getting in the way of the desire to fish...thx for the heads up and yes SG I will probably borrow that guide to get a bit more dialed on the longer float...cheers
