Loc: River that your fishing!
After catching 40 chums in a day of fishing I'm done for the season on those bad-ass fish. Plus I haven't kept a chum in the last five years. Their fun to catch but it gets old fast for me. I'm the type of fishermen that enjoys a challenge. Its commercial and the natives that are dragging their numbers down and by down I mean way down!
Just ten years ago their numbers were strong. I grew up on the Hump and I could remember my dad taking me down and seeing fish after fish being caught. But latley it seems at times their none existant. Its pretty sad if you ask me. I've sat and watched the natives just strip the chum for the eggs and toss the fish back into the water. What a fckin waste!!!! Its pretty sad!

Well at risk of getting ripped..............it is the eggs that have commercial value in chum. Just as it is the meat in Chinook. Not defending just stating a fact.

Chum stocks are regional in the things that are effecting them. Coastal stocks much different than say PS. Got a question. Anyone ever thought through the interaction with Chum spawning and surging? Just as Steelhead & Coho can be really tanked by low summer flows Chum get blasted by surging.

Think about it. Tree farms are on 40 yr rotations and trees don't hold water until they are 20 yrs or so. That said the Chehalis is about 80% tree farms 20% people roads ect. So about 60% of the basin does not hold water from surging which blows Chum right out of the gravel. Before we crock the timber guys remember at least trees do grow back on tree farms they don't when paved over so everyone moving here can love our natural beauty ( or what is left ) Bottom line WDF&W has failed time and time again to adjust harvest ratios to reflect the decreasing productivity of the watersheds across the state. Oh sure we have blips but graph runs over the last 80 yrs. Year to year / up down but start 80 yrs back .........from then to now numbers. It is down and going farther down. Fact of life and kinda sad but short of someone forcing the issue in court the trend will continue. Alaska looks better all the time..............it is this winter thing!

To be sure, blown rivers must be to blame for at least some loss of spawning redds, but observations from the field lead me to believe there might be several issues that have contributed to the steep decline in chum populations in the Chehalis basin.

Take, for example, the East Fork Satsop, which runs gin clear even when high, and seldom (if ever) leaves its banks. While C&R fishing for late coho and cutthroat in Octobers past, I distinctly remember the ever-present stench of rotting chum carcasses being an obligatory (and not altogether unwelcome, given the positive indications) part of the experience. In recent years, I have encountered only a few, isolated carcasses (and notably fewer live coho and chums).

Those who fish the East Fork regularly value it as a steady alternative when most other options are a bust due to high water and/or turbidity. Another highly redeeming quality the East Fork has traditionally offered its patrons is good populations of salmon and resident trout, as well as the occasional steelhead. Lately, it has become a ghost of its past self, but the stream bed has been relatively unchanged, which leads me to believe there are other factors at play. Even as few as three years ago, it was a sure bet to get into numerous coho, chums, and some brute searun and resident cutts. Recently, I have been lucky to hook anything.

When the healthiest stream in the drainage appears to be dying, it can't be a good indication for the future of the Chehalis basin.

As for chums: I love 'em. Fiesty, mean, and aggressive. Everything I like in a fish, and until recently, good numbers to boot. Their loss (if it cannot be stopped) will be mourned, at least by this angler.
