A little spring cleaning and oil/lower unit changes went down last weekend, and during the process I tried to turn the helm to port a bit, and *pop* suddenly I'm free-wheeling. Can turn the motor to starboard, but port just spins.

Push hard on the motor to port and no joy. Pull the helm pump and disconnect, motor glides to port (and hydraulic fluid shows at the helm).

Now I have the helm in hand, and am wondering if I can rebuild it or if I must replace it. Most folks talk about rebuilds when a seal goes, can I rebuild the pump itself (or pay someone to do this?)? Or just plunk down $400 for a new pump?

Thanks Hank, though you'll never catch me hanging my head for lack of luck. Life is good, and a few little problems in the shake down only makes the season opener with the boat running tip-top all the more satisfying...

It sounds like the check valve is stuck on the helm. Not uncomon when not used for a long time.
Try tapping on the back.
