SACRAMENTO, Calif. --
California handgun owners would no longer be able to carry their weapons in
public under legislation unveiled Wednesday at the state Capitol.

The bill marks the latest in a long series of fights over gun control.

Gun rights activists who stage so-called "open carry" events -- meant to dramatize
their rights -- have kicked up a fuss around the state.

"We have law-abiding citizens that are expressing their constitutional right.
And some people are uncomfortable with that," Sam Paredes, Executive director
of Gun Owners of California said.

Some members of law enforcement are apparently on that list.

"We view open-carry as an officer safety issue," Emeryville Police Chief Ken James
said. "Officers are taught from day one in the academy that guns are a threat."

No, they aren't going into houses and taking them away...not yet, but
many consider this as just another small, incremental step along that path, however.

I carry most days, but would never open carry unless I'm hunting or hiking. I find it rude. Legal yes, but rude. Most folks who open carry do so for shock value.

It is a wildlife recreation area, shooting of coyotes is not only legal, but encouraged! Sure shocked my fishing partner when I drew down on the yote.
