Looking for a steelhead rod and am soliciting your advice. Looking for a medium to medium heavy type casting rod. This rod will be used for repetitive casting. Line weight would be in the 8-17 pound range. Plug weight would be in the 3/8-1 ounce range, maybe a little more. Rod length will be 8.5-9 feet. Sensitivity, rod weight, and rod strength are of equal importance. Price range of $350 or less. Of the Loomis', St. Crois', Lamiglass', Okumas' and others, what are your recommendations?
Truth be told, I will not be fishing for steelheads but will be using the rod on the Gulf Coast for redfish(red drum) in tournament settings. These tournaments often require a rod that will allow a long cast and yet offer good sensitivity. Your suggestions are appreicated. Thanks.

Rainshadow XST 1085f I is a 9ft, 2 pc, 10 to 17. Very sensitive but holds up. If you know someone to build it Utmost Ent will give you a 25% discount on the blank and 5% on the rest of the parts.
You can get the blank, Alps guides TIC and textured exposed blank reel seat & grip for about $189 with tax & shipping. If you go high end grip add about $30. Built 5 of them now and everyone seems to love them.

Loomis STR 1025c. Hands down the best rod that fits the specs you listed. IMX if you want the best in sensitivity, GL3 if you want a little more strength/durability and still very sensitive.

What is the size range of your Redfish? Never fished for them so I have no clue, but I have seen some good sized specimens on fishing shows. For ripping larger plugs like the 1 oz. size you mentioned I like a extra-fast action rod. Personally I would look @ the Lamiglass X-89 MCT, light tip to let the lure work & plenty of muscle in the butt section to wrassle em out of the nasty stuff. Lamiglas calls it their "Magnum Taper" it works. Put a Abu Toro 50 on top & its hammer time......  c/22

Have one custom built the saltwater will kill the factory built rods. I recommend at least SS316 Stainless like Alps guides with either black plating or TC vapor deposition coating. I would go with either the 1085 or HS1021 This would be a suitable salt set up.

For pure function for the price, I really like the St. Croix Avid series. But, I have tried their Legend Elite and they are exceptional. Bit out of my price range, but would buy those if I could.

Redfish can reach 60 pounds.
I would not buy a light weight rod. A long cast is function of loading the rod along with bait weight and mainline and reel characteristics. 8.5 is not going to give you as much leverage or casting distance as 10 foot rod. If the other guys are using 7 foot bass rods, then 8.5 will be an improvement.

Guys, he needs a medium to heavy power with a light to medium tip. 6 to 20 # dependent on whee he is. I love reds! Dude, I love redfish! For a first rod find something in a 8 to 15 # range. Look at Berkley rods in a 8 -9 foot range. You should get a spinning version for having a wide range of options. There are more specialized rods, but a good Berkley will be a good start. I have many rods, from Loomis through Lami, through Raven, and Berkley, but I would start w the Berkeley give what you list as boundaries. And loosen the drag and rinse the whole set up after every trip out, rinse off the salt water, these rigs are not salt water ready.
