Hit a westside lake with a couple of friends today. Started out casting and retrieving leeches and damsel nymphs on floating and intermediate lines. Got a few fish doing this, but we were really just passing time waiting for the Callibaetis hatch to go off.
The hatch started around noon and was dying off when we left at 4:30.
This lake holds a nice population of wild bows, cutts and cutt-bows.
All are good looking fish, heavily spotted and very healthy
Big fish of the day was John's 18". We got one 17" and a few in the 14-15" range. The average size was 10-12" with lots of dinks as well, which bodes well for the future.

The Callibaetis in this lake are really large, so using a size 10 bug isn't to big. We got fish on Irresistible Adams, Parachute Adams, Sparkle Duns, Extended Body Duns and several emerger patterns.
Letting it sit, twitch it or stripping it in all produced. It really didn't seem to matter how you presented the fly.
Not a bad day weather wise with some showers and light winds. Both seemed to help the fishing.

Here are a few pics from today.

There aren't too many better ways to spend a day than that!

Jr's out of school next week and I'm overdue for some DF flinging. Thanks for the inspiration....

4 Wt Chromer

Keith,
I was east a couple weeks ago. No much going with chironomids. What I saw and pumped were small. Size 18 and 20 black bodied. No Callibaetis to speak of either. Damsels should be going strong by now.

I did read about a large boat hatch at Chopaka this last weekend.
Something like 200 boats! frown
Now I know why I don't fish it anymore.
