Built this on Sunday, as our chickens have attracted a few visitors. Added handles later, so I can move it like a wheelbarrow.

Good move. I've caught a few critters in my coop yard w/ a large "Hava-Heart". I really don't have much of a heart and now they are tanned and hanging in the shop.

Vedder could use that...but what he'd do with a full-grown bobcat once it's in the box would have the fixin's for a good TV reality show...or maybe even a Darwin Award smile

Fish on...

There is a top load door, on the wheel end, where you can lift it up to get a clean shot, but I may just snip out a bit of the hardware cloth. Seems like a safer alternative if there should be a coyote or a bigger animal in there.

Tuna for bait. For tweekers, I'm torn between copper wire and a catalytic converter. Trap sits next to the new chicken tractor, where my meat birds will grow out for the next 3 weeks.

+1! Though mine was so full of herself she probably would have floated on the water.

Dogfish, could you throw up a couple shots of the tripping mechanism... I'm needin to build one of those... critters were in my quail pen at lunch today... I'm headed out now to throw some lead...

Pics of the finished product, with handles for moving.

Connection to treddle plate. 3/8" eye bolt. Tightened to the bolt where it swivels nicely. Too tight and it won't work. The two nuts on either side of the eye are very tight.

3/8" threaded rod bent in such a way as to release perfectly. Took 48 bend attempts to perfect this.

Release mechanism. I need to trim the washer and secure it to the frame. Also, the hex nut you see is a 2" long nut that connects two pieces of all-thread rod together. That way the threads don't touch the frame and retard the release. There was a bit of hand fitting.

Actually, I got the bend right on the 2nd try. wink Also, all that chicken crap was from one day.

Looks like it will work.
I've caught hundred of critters in box traps.
Caught 19 raccoons in a row off my deck a number of years back.
Skunks are a pain in the ass.
They automatically spray when shot, then your place reeks for a week.
My kid has released them w/o getting sprayed, but it's a big gamble.
He's gone to school and been told "DUDE....you reek like weed!" skunk weed.

I'll set mine tonight, I'll bet I have a garbage eater in the morning.

For tweeker bait you might try a kicker motor. I'm told they can't walk by one.

That would be cool if you set up a metal shed open towards the road. Set a kicker, a chainsaw, in there and maybe hang a few other old power tools on the wall. Make sure they don't work.

Rig it all up the same way so if someone lifts one the door slams shut and bolts itself so any of their buddies can't get them out.

I would prefer if a small generator would fire up, with the exhaust directed into the shed, but that might raise a sticky legal issue.

The trick when a skunk is caught, is to hold a crappy blanket up in front of you as you walk towards the. The skunk can't see you, jsut this big, square thing moving slowly towards it, and doesn't get freaked out. When close enough to the cage, toss the blanket over it. They *usually* won't spray when you do this... jsut don't let'em see you!

Now I could really go somewhere with this comment, but for once I will take the high road.

Caught the lil trouble maker last night.
In earlier days I woulda plinked him with the .22, but a long distance relocation will give the little bugger a second chance....
Or at least make him someone else's problem.
