Props to the Brewer, I sent him 4 reels to repair, he fixed them all quickly and on budget. Contrary to what you might think by what he sometimes posts, he was a complete pleasure to deal with. I am now living the dream with some silky smooth curados and calcuttas. Anyway reel repair? Brewer is your man,

Brewer, I've got a 250 Calcutta Stogie that has had very limited use. But the "dog" doesn't engage every time the handle is turned after a cast. Does this make sense? Advice?

snit, there can be several things at play here. one being if the reel was made in malasia you may not have a ARdog, just a ARbearing. if the reel is actually made japan it has both, if it does have both then i can't make a call. cause the dog should back up the bearing. just may need a reclean and possable AR something replaced.

Thanks for the info Brewer. It's done it since the 2nd trip last year. I have (3) of the Stogies, and I got tired of looking at them sitting in the closet so I started using them for my plug reels last year. One works great, and the other one has had this issue since I first started using it.

snit, by chance are any of the reels a EBAY purchase?

i know when i've talked with doug at ollie damons, he mentioned that some calcutta reels had a poor placement of the ar-dog. meaning that the dog would raise to far and not fall when the crank was turned. causing the crank to rachet backwards. now he has said that if you have one of these reels as you do. box it up and send it to the nearest shimano factory. they may send you a newer model in exchange. sounds to me this may be a viable option.

Brewer, thanks for the info. I think one was an ebay reel, but the other two I found in tackle stores over the years, still new in the box. I'll do as you recommend! Thanks for the advice, and when I have a real "reel" problem, I'll send 'em to you!

For warranty questions.....any questions, how-tos, pertaining to Shimano, G.Loomis or Power Pro go here :
http://2coolfishing.com/ttmbforum/forumdisplay.php?f=72

Bantam1 is Dan Thorburn, ShimanoUSA Product Support Specialist and he runs this sub-forum at 2cool.
There are also several other very good reel surgeons that are active on the forum.

Be warned, it's a frog-gigger site, Texas and all grin
But it is the top Shimano forum in the land.
