I have yet to get a coho to take a twitched jig. Tried a lot of different patterns, big and small profile, mostly fished in slow water, sloughs/back eddys.

They're a lot cheaper than spinners though so I'd like to have some success.

Jigs are all we use up on the Situk in Alaska.
Have used Brad's jig at times and they have worked very well and the Situk is clear water which can put the lock jaw on Coho, but jigs seem to keep them biting, they are not afraid of jigs.

I recognize those spots.

I twitched up fish in both of those yesterday.

I was looking for pre hookset footage as well but good job getting into some fish.

I fish those spots as well but for some reason still toss spinners there. I need to get better with the jigs.

I've heard great things about twitching jigs for coho, but my success has been zero. I've spent alot of time targeting coho with lots of hardware and software (bait). However, twitching jigs is in the catagory of "Much thunder, no rain".

If you are twitching in places where there are coho and having no luck chances are your technique is a bit off. Go with someone who does well on the jig twitching and mirror their action a few dozen times and you will have it.

There is a book that covers twitching, but nothing beats having a mentor show you exactly how to do it.

Pretty tough to do "on getting a video of a hook set"...we were fishing water that is 10+ feet deep..........

How jigs are presented.......well cast....let sink......start "twitchin"....raise rod tip, 1 -2 feet...reel in "some line....then let jig sink to bottom............repeat process.......95% of the time they will hit "when the jig is dropping".

Sunday morning, there were 3 guys in another boat, spinners is what they were using.....cast, cast, cast......nothing.......I twitched up 2 native Silvers in ..... short order.......they left and went up river.......about hour and a half, I moved down river......they came down and 1st question they asked....."how many did I get".....I told them I had hooked 7 or 8, and missed a few........back they went up river BUT I don't think they had any jigs....

I'm 70 years old...pretty set in my ways.....have caught 100's of Coho/silvers on plugs, spinners, bait, spoons.......twitching is just fun...I'm surprised at the different water colors, they will work in. With a light action 10+ foot rod and spinning reel and some Coho that are in a biting mood.....fun, fun, fun.........

I've done well just lifting up 12-18 inches. The key thing is to be in their face, just off the bottom with your presentation.
Same location like jigging slabspoons in the estuary.

IMHO much like bass fishing a crawdad jig near nesting time.

Leadhead jigs can be Coho killers in some waters, and not very effective in others.

Rivers like the Skykomish are really challenging, rivers and saltwater in Alaska can be a strike on every couple of casts.

I definitely prefer barbless hooks on my jigs.

My favorite jigs in Alaska and Puget Sound saltwater are tied with flashabou to resemble a bait fish. These can be very effective off Whidbey Island beaches and I have done well on the Skagit. A pink squid has worked well for me on some waters.

Of course I had a good mentor, some guy that wrote a book about fishing with jigs.

It is pretty easy to do. It is easiest in slow/still water, where you can get on top or nearly on top of the fish. DrifterWA has nailed it 1-3 foot lift, twitch, twitch, let drop and repeat. Everything is subtle with this technique. When a fish takes a swung jig, he generally darts forward and nabs it. If you feel him close to the instant he loads up the line you have a good chance of hooking him, if you feel him while he is trying to shake the hook you generally lose him (with barbless hooks).

I saw DrifterWA on Sunday up where he was hooking his fish. Later on I had 2 fish take my jig while it was just hanging about 6 feet below the boat after my very last twitch/drop.

I also had something strange happen, I was headed to just a little side pocket off some really fast water. To get into this pocket in a sled, you have to run right over the spot where the fish would be hanging at, and kill the motor. I ran over the spot (about 8 feet deep) and killed my motor. You can imagine a sled coming to a stop in about an 20 foot wide little pocket making quite a bit of commotion. I turned around and cast into the water still roiled up from my boat and the fish took on the second drop. I was surprised in such clear water that the fish wasn't spooked off that edge. My only hatchery fish of the day.

Two questions:

First, what kind of setup do you recommend for casting a light jig very far on say 20lb braid?

Second,

What rivers still have chrome salmon in them? It's still a little early for the steel in my neck of the woods, and I don't necessarily want to drive to the OP for a day trip.

Thanks!

Nets did go back in 12 Noon, Sun. Nov. 14 ---12 Noon. Fri. Nov. 19

I've been using a Cabelas 8 - 15# spinning rod, Stratic 300, 30# power pro "hi Vis" line. The PP is tied directly to a duo-lock....allows me to change jigs quickly, if needed.

I use the 30# PP, Hi vis......for a couple of reasons.....

1. allows me to get back most of the jigs IF the jig gets hung up.

2. I've found I do best if the jig "hits the bottom", believe me, you can see this by watching the line, when it hits bottom. Then I start the "twitchin process"

Oh....went to one of my fun rods, yesterday 10 1/2' Shimano, 4 - 6# rated....Shimano 25 with 20# Hi Vis PP. Not a meat stick, just lot's of fun......

Jigs for twitching aren't all that light.
