My favorite fly for lakes are Damsel, Wooly bugger's, Big ass Leech, and new to me last year was chronomid's and Zonkers. Zonkers worked fantastic at the secret lake in mid November. I cant wait to try some of the Zen Leechers flies that he has been teaching me how to tie. Just want to know what you guy's or girls like to use.

I have done well in the past trolling Carey Specials. Ya, Ya, I know it is not fly fishing but trolling fly's is still extremely effective in the spring time.

Carl,
As long as it's a fly you're trolling and not a plug on a downrigger, you're making progress. Soon you'll be back with us and not on the dark side anymore.
My favorite fly is a leech imitation of some sort or a woolly bugger which is another leech imitator.
I will admit to also using chronies under indicators with great success. But, I will let someone else claim the title of Chronie Master or Zen Chironimid.
Maybe that will be Carl's title once he gets a fishing rod that has the reel on the underside.... and not a spinning reel.
But there is something to the name of Darth Plug Puller.... that's a dark side name, isn't it?

TM, Don't think I am familiar with the pattern "Big Ass Leech". Will you refresh me with the details of that pattern?

I don't have a favorite lake fly because I don't fish lakes very often. But I have a favorite small river fly. A pale yellow Elk Hair Caddis. I've had some what good luck with it in all the places that I've tried it. Jim S.

I am wanting to get started in fly fishing. I do some lake fishing, but not with flys. Would any of you masters be so kind as to help a poor soul such as myself to get started? I have no idea what to do. I have two old poles and one reel. I think that the reel is broken though. Could you help me with what kind of stuff I need to get started? And could someone please tell me what chronie means? Thanks

Fishboy5:
You might check out FF outfits at Outdoor Emporium, they have some reasonably priced outfits. Plus their flies are $.75 each, Cabelas also has some. Chronies are small larvae fond in lakes / ponds. Normally fished below a strike indicator (bobber). Depth can vary from a foot or two to over 15', fished on a floating line.
Ask the questions, hopefully you'll get good answers.

JS - I did hit Pass. Didn't do very well - picked up one dink, small for Pass. Only saw two others caught froma total of 10 fisherman.
I did send you a response on Friday, in fact a couple of them. For some reason they didn't get posted. Lets try to hit Pass a little later in the winter / early spring. Always like company.
The 3,000 - 5,000 swans in a field by the freeway were great, looked like snow there were so many of them.
