I am getting things ready to get some jigs for salmon and steelhead and need to know what hooks you all prefer and what sizes. I am thinking nothing smaller than a #1 hook and probably a MUSTAD 32833BLN jig hook.

Also, are sickle hooks a consideration? Has anyone used them for salmon and winter run steelhead? I know VMC makes the Barbarian but the smallest is a 2/0 which seems large for a jig hook and I can't find anyone who can pour anything larger than #1 in the molds they have.

i use rvrfshr jig hooks and love them. they are a sickle bend hook

I like the heavy wire Matzuo Sickle 60 degree hooks. Been using em for a few years now and like them a lot.

I have a couple boxes of saltwater Wright & McGill #1 and 2/0 jig hooks that I have been thinking about selling.

They are boxes of 1,000 hooks, manufactured in 1981 when I was co-owner of Sebastes Jigs.

Check the classified on PP in a couple of days.

I'd prefer to sell them by the box, but might break them into 100 hook units.

They are Wright & McGill 635 Cad plated hooks. Cabela's sells them in units of 100 for $6 to $7, plus S&H.

I love the Mustad 2x strong steelhead jig hooks! They are very strong and go down to size 10 for those who like micro jigs. I have not had one bend out or break ever and I have not heard of any problems from any customers. You can get them for a great price on captain hooks warehouse and they are carrying the new version of those hooks. Good luck.

Okay, hook size, is a #2 big enough for Chinook and Coho? I know it is for steelhead, both summer and winter run. If a #2 is big enough then I may have my hooks really soon.

I normally use a 3/0 for salmon is why I am asking. I know hook size in Octopus is more for holding large baits but have to ask. Jigs are proving deadly for Chinook here but I don't know what sizes everyone uses.

I use a minimum 3/0 hook on my King Salmon jigs. In tidewater I bump my hook size up to 5/0 for the big Kings using up to 40-pound leader. I've landed plenty of kings using smaller hooks but noticed a huge increase in the hook up to land ratio after switching over to the bigger hooks. I use Owner saltwater hooks and once you stick em they're pretty much to the boat.

Hard to go wrong with the Mustad or Owner Hooks. 1/4 & 1/8 oz jig on a size 1/0 hook. 1/16 oz jig on a number 1 hook. Smaller jigs are tied on the Mustad style jig hook that you mentioned. Works for me!

First Bite is right on with the larger hooks. I use 1/0 for coho,2/0 for kings. Look at the next fish you catch, they can swallow somewhere between a golf ball and an orange. Big fish, big bait.

I have caught a lot of coho on #6 mustad 2x and a few Chinook. They are very strong hooks even down to the smaller sizes. Like Mark said for big Chinook I would use a larger 3/0 to 5/0 hook. For coho I actually like the #1 and that size works good for jigging coho too.

Looks like the mustad 32833BLN is only 8.95 per hundred at Captian hooks wharehouse. What size hook should I use for a 3/8 oz coho jig(used for jigging).

2/0 probably.

W&M = Eagle claw. Caught a 27lb steelhead on a #4 630. I also like the 635's, with their heavier wire.
