Well, The Situk Steelhead fishing has started off real good again this year. Slow connection so only a few pics to start.

4 guys hooked over 60 fish the first day and these fish coming into the river are hot fish and just flat tear you up. The upper river is full of winter fish that have all the great colors with the lower river fish chrome bright!

The Halibut fishing has not disappointed us either!!

You all need to come up and join us for this Steelhead fishery, there is not another Steelhead river that can compare and that includes Canada!
These Natives are so strong even a 10lb fish will make a run that you cannot stop, and the 15 to 20 lb'ers, oh my, can you say thumb burner!
I hooked one last night (14lb range) that hit and took off so fast that all I could do was watch it run straight into the brush and leave my trout bead in a branch!
More pictures Monday after I get home.

Yesterday we went out on the ocean again, it was just to nice weather wise.
What a great day.

Today we could only fish the morning, but it was just as good as two days ago, 3 of us hooked about 40 and landed 28.
Here is a couple typical chrome fish. Lots of big dollies to, pictures later.

What's with the dollies? I never caught any the six days I fished the Situk.

Dave--The river is full of Dollies now, we would catch about 3 dollies for every Steelhead in some holes. They ranged in size to, from small to pretty darn big. They do spawn around the same time as the Steelhead so it makes sense.
The river is swarming with Coho smolts to. Amazing eco system.

Here is the walk into the lower river.

And one coming in--

Still have fish pouring in, looks like a record run this year. I hope the numbers are huge, it will prove the system is real healthy.

Only 5 weeks to go and then back up for more Halibut on the anchor and Sockeye in the Situk. This retirement thing is looking to work out real well...!!!

GBL,

Unless there is something very different about Situk dollies, they, like all char spawn in the fall, while steelhead spawn in the spring. The dollies are most likely on a foraging migration for smolts and perhaps loose steelhead eggs. Dollies, bull trout, or native char if you will, generally over winter in fresh water in coastal WA streams after spawning the previous fall, and move downstream in the very early spring to forage on outmigrating salmon fry and smolt.

I'll come up one of theses days and check it out.

I'll bet you are right, most of them were slim and pretty hungry and with all the smolts in the river, they are having no problem eating.
The ones we get during Coho season are big and fat.
Thanks for the info.

Still getting fresh Steelhead in the lower river and the upper river is full for anyone wanting to make a last minute run to Yakutat.
We have plenty of rooms right now and for those that have been to the lodge, still have great food!
