Drove through a number of spots along the Sky today at mid-day, lots of shiny rigs with gear visible in them. . . .. luckily, no broken windows to be seen. .. .. lots of fishermen out there today, river looked good, wish I would have been fishin. .. ...

I feel like I should chime in.

Luis I appreciate you bringing this to people's attention who may not have been aware.

On Sunday the 12th Drew and I were fishing Proctor and my window was broken out. Alarm on, red light blinking. And the obvious target must have been my iPod. But they also took off with two bags of mine. One was a backpack filled with tackle. The other was the real heartbreaker for me. It had a Hasselblad medium format camera and two Zeiss lenses in it. Replacement cost for all my items, not including the window, was over $9,000. The actual value of the camera to me wasn't measured in dollars and cents. It was willed to me by my father who passed away last August. Some things can't be replaced. I've never had these kind of issues on the Skykomish so they caught me with my pants down this time. It won't happen again.

Another important thing I should mention was the obvious fact that these thieves were not in any way shape or form fisherman. One thing they didn't take, which was lying right next to my tackle bag, was a 1025C IMX with a Curado on it. I feel like if they're fisherman they probably would've grabbed that.

It begs the question, Why would you leave such equipment in a vehicle?

After all of the comments on here about the rash of breakins and how bad its gotten I will not even take my rig up there. It will remain behind locked gates with paid access where everyone watches out for each other.

This question or message does not in any way exempt those sleazebags from this type of abysmal behavior and I believe that they should be caught, prosecuted and made tp repay for every single item stolen and then spend time in jail.

Valid Question.

I put the camera bag in there a week prior when I was gonna head up and fish because I figured after I fished I could take some photos because theres several places in that area to take wonderful photos. After fishing that day I just went home and when I was taking things out of my car all I grabbed were the things that took up a lot of space (tripod, rods, waders, cooler, etc.) and left the camera bag on the floor board behind my passenger seat.

By the following week I had forgotten the camera was there. I didn't actually realize it was missing until I was driving through Monroe after my car had been broken into. As far as the tackle bag goes, I don't like carrying it around on the bank. I'll obviously just load up my vest at home and leave it from now on when I'm bank fishing. And as for the rod, I also didn't wanna carry that down the bank. I was actually on my way back to grab it and switch to drift gear when I found my window all over the ground.

With that all said I've learned my lesson and won't repeat that mistake.

Sorry to hear about that theft, Drift in.
In a rage I could easily take a chunk of #6 rebar, break their legs and leave them on the side of the road.
I might feel bad about it afterwards, but I kinda doubt it.

I even turn my neoprene reel cases half inside out so they are obviously empty when I leave my rig. Absolutely nothing in there worth taking. Been doing this for 10 years and it wasn't because of a fishing related break in. It was because I am paranoid out there. Too many freaks of nature wondering the woods.

DD,

If you might feel bad afterward for breaking a tweaker-thief's legs and leaving 'em beside the road, you're a better man than I. I wouldn't leave 'em beside the road. I'd tie 'em to a tree and slather 'em with bear bait. I'd only feel bad if it failed to attract a bear.

I hope this turns out in your favor and that you find the things that are so close to your heart and fervently hope that others take heed in this discussion so that we don't have to hear another tale such as this.

Good luck in your recovery efforts.

Maybe we should start leaving half empty bottles of jack d and such with a bit of drain-o or something in our rigs?? lets the tweakers get good and sick off it? might thin them out a bit??

The thing I just can't understand is why so many fishermen leave valuables in their rigs? My regular partner can't seem to go fishing without a duffle or 2. Kind of burns me when I drive and he leaves them in my rig b/c I'm toting my stuff in Fred Meyer bags in the car and on my back at the river. Ash tray, console, and glove are empty and open. Registration's in my vest. Just sayin'........................

That's an idea.

or
If you had a place to park your vehicle by itself, where no one would have business near it......
Then set up a couple of bear traps....one each side.
That's a dream of mine, catching a thief in a bear trap grin

Too bad all the fun stuff can land you in jail.
