I'm going fishing in two days and I can't find any mono that floats at the local sporting good stores I was wondering if I could get by rubbing fly line floatant on my mono due to not having enough time to order any.

Good question and good idea. Try it and let us know.

FWIW,I use Siglon F on my center pin. Works good.

i use mucilin silicone line dressing when i'm bobber fishing. works good.

In a pinch, peel off fifty feet of line and reel it in tight, dragging it over a candle...works like a charm, takes one minute, and you likely have one around the house somewheres already.

Stam is 100% on in both observations. Many monos float, but do they have all the other qualaties you want? Just for fun Google floating mono . . .

This is what I use. My buddy uses siglon F and my mono, with this stuff on it, out mends it. I swear the mono obsorbs it after a while and you rarely have to put it on as much. My mainline I've had on since the begining of june and has turned grey from the stuff. But the line is in ship shape, mends like a champ, and maintains a much better presentation then thread line. It's a little clear for thread line right now anyways (in some places).

I worry about using braid because of the clarity of the water. I would much rather have just one knot and some good mono between me and the fish. I will be using a small dink float split shot and a 1/16th ounce jig.

I have gone back to mono for summer run float fishing. I have had too many broken mono leaders with braid. It was probably my fault for setting the hook. Even with a slow action rod, the lack of stretch in braid would snap my mono leader. I will have to give the line floatant on mono a try.

Do well in a pinch and no nukes.

Braid...30 Pound power pro, HI-VIS.........If you are breaking leader on the hook set........CHANGE LEADER MATERIAL.

Color DOES NOT SPOOK THE FISH.....Hell if it did, fly fishermen would be "out of luck"...because lot's of floating fly line is colored....

I add the floatant material, about every 4-5 days.....can really notice the difference!!!!!

Mucilin works well for floatant on mono.

I'm partial to high quality hi-viz lo-mem mono for float mainline, but braid certainly has advantages when it comes to memory and mendability on a spinning reel. Still, when it comes to line control, nothing beats high quality floating monofilament on a centerpin; exceeding even fly lines. Never used Siglon F, but can highly recommend Raven.

Braid does have good advantages other than just flotation that others may have mentioned. It has very little stretch so you can set the hook without a huge swing and also get a hook in them from farther distances. It has smaller diameter for less line of the water.

There are a number of inherent advantages to a centerpin/mono set up that give it tremendous advantages over other float fishing systems. Such as:

1. Line - comes off a large arbor with little or no memory, thus allowing use of mono to gain it's benefits without having to use braid and suffer it's disadvantages.
2. Rod - length required for casting allows less line in water and greater mend control. Improves hook set and protection of lighter tippets. Also allows use of longer fixed float for hold back techniques.
3. Reel (the secret sauce)- Silky smooth action allowing line to feed with zero drag or be held back with precise control.

But just as different techniques, like fly fishing or using a baitcaster for drift fishing, have their own advantages in certain situations, they each require a certain level of technical proficiency to realize their benefits. I'm not saying that any technique is easier or more difficult than another, but CP technique is very different than others and most folk around these parts don't have either the experience, the proper equipment or the patience to obtain enough skill to realize the benefits. Dave Vedder's book does a great job of explaining the inherent benefits of CP, but at the end of the day it comes down to line control. While casting doesn't catch fish as much as line control does, it is definitely the biggest issue folks have to overcome with the technique. That along with the high cost of a quality reel usually present hurdles just too high for most. Lack of fighting drag can also be a problem for some, but as far as pure line control, CP has no peer.

Personally, I don't think there is any point in dabbling with CP. IMO, it's like fly fishing, you either commit to it to fully realize the benefits or save yourself the time, money and aggravation. Other typical float techniques are totally sufficient for the NW, where our fish are not what I would call "picky". However, pinning definitely has it's rewards for those that invest the time.

If we ever get up to the Thompson again Stamley, we'll have to ask brother Carter to demonstrate float tossing with a CP......I know Sol took those guys from Michigan down the Duc a while back and he said that it was like the summer solstice Freemont parade with them 14-ft rods swinging around the driftboat
