Bellingham police dismantle guillotine used in self-mutilation

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Bellingham police have dismantled a homemade guillotine apparently used by a man to sever his right arm at a transient camp.

Sgt. Les Gitts says police saved only the heavy metal plate used as the blade, in case it'is needed for evidence.

Gitts described the guillotine as "pretty elaborate." It was out of sight in a wooded area until police investigated Thursday after the injured man walked into a clinic.

Police searched the area and found the guillotine and the severed arm. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in hope it could be reattached.

Gitts said Monday he didn't know if that was successful. The hospital wouldn't say for privacy reasons. The man was reported in serious condition Friday in the intensive care unit.

It musta triggered early before he could pull himself all the way in to get his head lined up.

Must agree with Dave. Anyone who can take the time to construct a guillotine to cut off his own arm and still have the desire to go through with the severing afterwards is more than a bit "different" in his thinking from what society deems "normal." Hard to question his resolve, but why waste such a highly-skilled arm?

Apparently he walked into a urology clinic.

Maybe we need to have a law that requires potential guillotine owners to pass an operators test, and only then furnish them with a license to operate said guillotine? Drivers Ed, Hunters Ed, Guillotine Ed.........

There'd be a fee of course.
