I'm looking for a long-gun gunsmith in the general Seattle/Tacoma area. Specifically, a gunsmith who's good at milling a Remmy Model 700 barrel for a muzzle break.

Dan Cowen was my "go to" recommendation, but apparently he's no longer in business.

Anyone know of any gunsmiths who can and will do the work? You'd think finding someone to work on a long-gun in this area an easy task. Not so.

Dogfish? Big-Daddy? Bueller? Someone has to know of a good gunsmith in the area that can do the job correctly.....

Would appreciate any info, RINK, etc.

I'll ask for a few ideas. I have friends up that way who aren't afraid of guns, like I am.

I know a guy down my way...

Can't help with a smith up there but if you haven't picked out a brake, I've seen these often recommended by the long range crowd and AR fanciers. Several sizes, carbon and stainless, inexspensive, too.

ross schuler muzzle brake (one man shop, Ebay storefront)

I think you could call it a modified Miculek brake.

I personally wouldn't run a brake on any rifle I own. I can't imagine hunting with earplugs, and I like my hearing too much to shoot a braked rifle without them.

Just something to think about.

As far as someone to do the work,my buddy has used Rick Freudenburg for a couple projects. He is in Everett 425-347-3986

Used to run a shop out of Sam's Guns on Airport Road. Not sure if he is still there or not.

Yep, hearing protection is mandatory with brakes.

I was just talking to Dan on Saturday, he is selling the machine shop to another smith & finishing up the projects he has started. I don't know how long it will take the new guy to get up to speed, but Dan is gone in like 2-3 weeks.

The storefront w/ the used guns & reloading supplies will be run by John Pintos daughter. You guys should stop by if you like older Colts & Smith & Wesson's, they just picked up a few older gentlemans collections.

I looked @
Model-18-3 4" (of course)
Model 29-2 6"
Colt Commander Gold Cup

All in very nice shape.

Very excellent. Will do a very nice trigger job on the 700 as well as all metal work. Top notch.

If you'd like to feel what the trigger will be like after give me a call. He reduced pull from around 8 to 2.5#'s for something like $30 while the gun was in.

Jim Cloward is a good smith, I thought he retired. Looks like he just moved north.

The brake on my 6.8spc is abusive to the ears, especially with a 16.25" barrel. Same with the brake on my .458. Yeah, I've fired a number of rounds hunting with both without protection. Not fun.

Switching over to a standard flash hider, on my 6.8, that doubles as a quick detach suppressor mount. I will probably fit most of my sub 0.30" rifles with similar mounts.

Standard threadings are 5/8"x24 or 1/2"x28. Anything above .223 should be 5/8"x24.

Thanks guys. Went up to see Jim. Great old codger! thumbs

Dropping the idea of a muzzle break and just going to have him do some trigger work on my 700's.

I have several Harris bipods.

If anything, I find using a Harris off a bench *harder* than just using a sandbag and proper shooting techniques. The 7mm does some serious bouncing around when using a Harris.

They are too heavy to pack in the field.

If anything, they look cool and attach well to my tactical zombie guns.

When afield, have used trees, boulders, logs, daypacks and Stoney Point shooting sticks with much success. Have even used the laundry room door with similar outcomes.... wink

For the range, I run Protektor owls on a rest forward and bunny ears aft.

Jeeez, I use that Harris off the bench & in the field. Thing can't weigh more than what a pound?

Saved my bacon on more than one hunt. Smoked a 14" pronghorn at 300+ that I guarantee I would have missed otherwise.
