Dogfish? You actually want to catch them? Darn man good for it, clean them out. Anything with a piece of Herring on it should work. But be careful after you catch one. I think the rules state that you can't mutilate them and then throw them back like the before. Salmon leaders work great but cost $. But then you might catch a Salmon before the Dogfish get your Herring.

Heres what I do anytime I feel like getting some Dogfish...I pick up some herring at the store and each herring can be cut up into like 5 pieces, no need to use a whole or half of one, it will cost you too much...I use like a 1-5 oz. banana weight with like a 6 foot leader, and I buy really cheap hooks, like big packs of them...Not like a 6 pack of Eagle Claw, like a huge bundle of 50 or 100, cause they can be used for the next trip...Not treble either, but then I hook up a chunk of herring, get the dogfish to the boat, and hopefully if the hook isn't too deep, I use a dehooker to get the hook out or if they cut the line with their teeth or if I have to cut the line, I have such a long leader and I am quick at tying a good knot so I just have the hooks ready and tie on a new one and bait it up and drop it back down, and after a while, that 6 foot leader works it way down to like 2 feet and then I retie a new leader....

I've got some pics of the leader Superfly uses. And some pics of the fishing. I'll post them tomorrow, 'cause I'm at work wiping butt tonight.

Don't waste your money on salmon or wire leaders. Get yourself a case of Hamm's and some cheap danielson snap swivels. Run 5 of them in a row, I think your in about 79 cents at this point. Dig in your tacklebox for the oldest hook you can find and load it with the worst freezer burnt hunk of meat you need to dispose of. Drop to the bottom crack a cold refreshing land of sky blue waters beverage and wait about 30 seconds, fish on! If you could concentrate your efforts around Jeff Head, President Point, Manchester, and Norweigan Point I will leave a case of the good stuff minus the rebate voucher in your pickup. A bonus sixer of PBR will be added for every 50 dogfish. Similar to the pike minnow fishery you'd be saving me a ton of cash in salmon gear. Tight lines and frayed leaders.

Hmmm I'm not sure, but we might actually NEED dogfish in Puget Sound. From the Bio Reports I've read, the population in the Sound is about 25% avg historic levels. The law of unintended consequences, often cited but rarely defined, is that actions of people always have effects that are unanticipated or "unintended." Aggresively removing a relativly this relatively large predator/scavenger from an ecosystem might be having negative effects on the salmon fishery.
Maybe I'll find some white papers describing the interaction between salmonids and Squalus acanthias in Puget Sound. If so I'll post a link here.
Whether you agree with me or not, our goals are mutual, lots of salmon.

Hey, take it easy on the "mini me's". I use a 50# test wire leader when targeting these beasts. Use some sort of chum, like tuna or canned pink salmon and you have an awesome day for the young-uns.
