When it comes to the environment, people generally suck.

Folks like her are the exception to the rule and stories like this help to renew my confidence in human kind. Every little bit helps.

It takes time or money to properly dispose of a battery. No longer supposed to just put them in the garbage. Just like folks throwing trash and stuff off logging roads, etc.

Good for her for undertaking a localized trash removal project. By her own acknowledgement these batteries have been on the bottom for a long time - that is, the "pre-awareness" period (and the $6.00 battery core charge).

However, take notice of what she said in the comments:

"Q) why not just leave them, they are not hurting anything... A) Prove to me that bare lead and heavy metals in water is of zero impact and they are not eyesores in the beautiful UW world and I'll be happy to leave them. Oh wait, I can't, we already took them out.

The fact is that in response to similar citizen concerns the Federal EPA has looked at the issue of lead such as this (and fishing weights, downrigger balls, and commercial fishing lead lines) and determined that they do not represent a hazard. And that is exactly why the efforts this legislative session to ban lead fishing weights failed - there is no evidence that in their inert form they present a hazard.

I wonder what divers would use in lieu of lead in their weight belts if bare lead in the water were to be determined a hazard?

I dated Laura for a few years during and after college. I introduced her to the underwater world of scuba diving and it became her passion.

I think at this stage it makes their crew feel good about removing the batteries from the Puget Sound as well as gives them something to do under water.

She's also been featured on the local TV stations as one who video documents sewage that flows from the streets of Seattle, down the drains, out of sight/mind to you and I, and out directly in the Sound via tunnels/pipes.

She means well and at least tries. Can't find any fault in that.

She's probably logged over 10,000 dives in the Sound!

We as a sport fishing group would KILL to have someone like Laura on our side.

And you failed to introduce her to the topwater world of sportfishing? How did WE miss that opportunity???

Or is that off topic?

Come on Parker! You can't leave us hanging just sayin you used to date her.
How was the swimming in that ocean? Since it was college at UW I'll assume you probably found a few urchins and various crabs while skin diving.

That could be why she and Paker parted ways.
