Tuesday before the water blew out on the Bogy I landed my 1st winter run on the the swung fly. I am new to this this! What a rush I never expected! Big swirl and the fight was on. 10 min. in I was beginning to wonder if it was gear problem as to why i could not turn his head to shore or my inexperience fighting with a fly rod. Granted I have landed 100's on the spinning/casting setup but this was different. Working the 13 foot rod was different. As it turns out the fish was 15#+ and that was why I had a bitch of a time. It was a major tug of war, and in the end, all by myself, I could not get a pic during the release...damn. That's ok because I am hooked to do more before it closes, and have the confidence in my presentation and fly patterns that I never had before. Thanks OP.

Congrats and nice starter fish Seriously, what a great fish for your first steelie on a bug rod. Having a picture would've been nice but the memories are even better.

With a guy catching a steelhead on the swing, another saying he prefers to "flyfish" with an indicator, and Parker chiming in about flyfishing (though, surprisingly, he has yet to re-post a pic yet )...there's no reason this thread can't make it to seven pages, too Fish on... Todd

What type of reading glasses were you wearing? OK, funny this time. Context matters.

You guys are really letting me down. Do I have to post a pic of a fish I caught on a bead, with a centerpin of all things, to get this started? Fish on... Todd

somebody somewhere has a picture of a steelhead caught on a worm jig under an indicator on a fly rod... i know cause i watched it happen on the river this year and saw them take the pics... that's true fly fishing right there but to those of you who swing - i applaud you for staying true to the technique... none of this float fishing or bobber dogging stuff i see being done.

I go fishing, with a rod, reel, line, and lure...sometimes bait+hook. It gets too complicated for me much beyond that.

Bobber dogging is for pussies, no matter what kind of rod/reel they use! Fish on... Todd

You already flyfish, and you're a Red Sox fan...really, what have you got to lose?
Sorry...that wasn't very nice. Accurate, but not nice Fish on... Todd

a heavy skagit, 650grain or more is a MUST! you can't turn the plug over without it and just won't get that sparkle on your wobble throughout the run. On bright days I recommend blu and chrome, on darker days I fish blue and chrome, and on days ending with Y blue with just a touch of chrome seems to churn up the bite! its a little tricky to double spey these things so I would stay with something simple like a snap T. the rvr stickler seemed to do the trick but the key was to really let him take it and allow the long rod to load up. Low rod tip, feel the grab and lift! as for rod I like the $800 winston B2mxs, they have the back bone to launch a plug in any run, but are sensitive enough to feel the bite and load the rod as the fish turns down river with your plug.

lots of fish in the Jags! but this one bite on the dangle of a nice slushy run and most important thing I forgot was you gotta have a nice loose fitting ascot while swinging plugs
