I agree with f4b: let's shoot for the moon. The commies will do the same, and we should end up with each group getting about 2/3 of what we ask for. If the returns materialize as forecast, like last year, we won't be able to catch them all, and we may end up exceeding escapement goals again.

This system sucks, but it's the current reality. With that, we had better grab all we can. Those of us who give a $hit will put back fish we could legally keep, and that should help us accomplish our conservation goals, albeit through ironic means. Rather than advocating for putting more wild fish on the gravel, only to have that "foregone opportunity" snatched up by gillnetters, we should bombard the State with bloodlust during NOF and then "forego our opportunity" as we see fit. Is that what they call "the tail wagging the dog?"

Very interesting meeting.....3/29/2012, 10 a.m.--11:30 a.m., WDFW meeting room in Monty.

3-4 NT, 8-10 sport fishing, 2 WDFW personnel......most of the same talk as other meetings, sturgeon and steelhead, was mentioned about those on the sports side, that don't know the process.

Lot's of talk about "live boxes", talk about the big Coho numbers, Chum was a topic.

Willapa was talked about briefly....what I found interesting NO talk, at all about Humptulips Area 2 C.....Humptulips not much talk.

WDFW employee said something about "spring chinook" at beginning of the meeting......time ran out never came up again.

Will have a full car, going to NOF, tomorrow......this could be the "biggie" for sports in the Chehalis and Humptulips. Tough to wear the white hat for all the fishing groups.......be there to defend your "back side".

Just for the sake of saying it, I realize that I am probably putting far too much faith in my fellow sporties by suggesting that a large number of legal fish would be released if they gave us a big bag limit. I sometimes forget that not everybody is conservation-minded, and some folks would probably take a limit every day of the season if given the chance. The way this kill 'em all mentality works, any allocation strategy is a double-edged sword.

Get ready for what promises to be the most liberal salmon season we have seen in Grays Harbor in a MIGHTY long time, folks. The proposed Region 6 GH rec season going into PFMC this week is as follows:

Hump dates look identical to last year with 3 adult salmon in the daily bag.... opens 9-16 thru 9-30 no bait, then Oct 1 thru Nov 30 with bait. Goes down to 2 adults Dec 1 thru Jan 31. The BONUS for 2012 is that one may be a WILD coho. Chinook will be the same.... ONE king. Release chum.

The bay will open 9-16 thru Nov 30 with a 3 adult bag.... ONE may be a chinook thru Oct 7 (3-week chinook retention), TWO may be WILD coho, release chum.

Chehalis FW opens 9-16 thru Nov 30 up to Porter with a 3 adult bag... ONE may be a chinook for the entire month of October, TWO may be wild coho, release chum, else release chinook.

Chehalis above Porter opens Oct 1 thru Nov 30 for a 3 adult bag... TWO may be WILD coho, release chinook and chum.

From Dec 1 thru Jan 30, Chehalis and tribs bag drops to 2 adults... ONE may be a WILD coho, release chinook and chum.

Wynoochee up to White Bridge/Hoquiam/Wishkah open Sept 16 thru Jan 31 for 2 adults... ONE may be a WILD coho, release chinook and chum. Same goes for Black River except it opens Oct 1.

Satsop opens Sept 16 thru Nov 30 for 3 adults... ONE may be a CLIPPED chinook thru Oct 31, TWO may be WILD coho, otherwise release chinook and chum. Dec 1 thru Jan 31 it drops to 2 adults.... ONE may be a WILD coho, release chinook and chum.

Skook/Newaukum opens Oct 1 thru Nov 30 with a 3 adult bag... TWO may be wild coho, release chinook and chum. Dec 1 thru Jan 31 it drops to 2 adults... ONE may be a WILD coho, release chinook and chum.

Bigger and better than last year? YAH...YOO BECHA!

While there could be some minor tweeks on the Chehalis side over the next few days at PFMC (pending negotiations with QIN), you get a pretty good idea that there are LOTS of wild coho to be harvested in this system, and a pretty consistent pattern of how we are gonna go about getting it done.

Edit Reason: edited Jan 30 to 31, also corrected Hump bag

Allowing king retention in the Bay is retarded.

Fish on...

You'd have to be in the trenches to fully understand.

Doc,

Thanks for posting the info. I landed at least 10 hatchery chinook on the satsop last year. The wife will enjoy the news.

Is it going to be the whole Hump opening on the 16, or just above the bridge on Ocean Beach road?

Just so my email calms down. Yes several options existed at the start of the meeting in Oly but was down to two quickly and for nearly 4 hours. Came back after lunch and wella changes and yes the changes came about after Mr. Anderson showed up. Other than that I am clueless as to why R 6 reversed direction and added commercial time.

Yes everyone left the NOF meeting with the dates & days of the NT nets. Are they finalized NO as the QIN has to agree and WE DO NOT KNOW THE QIN SCHDULE YET either.

Yes the schedule outlined above is a good one BUT understand the nets will dominate the fresh water river for the entire month of October and probably the last week of September. Number of exact days we are waiting for the QIN & WDF&W to finish up. There will be more combined netting days than last year to be sure.

Almost forgot. New catchy phrase from NOF. " It don't pay to go to lunch! "

Whoa!....can you back up a bit? Your getting ahead of the messenger. 99.9% of us don't know what the before lunch and after lunch scenario was for the NT gillnetters at that meeting.

What were the days proposed before and after this about face by the dept?

As much as I like to fish and eat fish I am dis-appointed that any attempt at conservation has been thrown out long ago.
For the 1st time in a long time we have some "extra" fish. We will kill every last one of them.
It's beginning to seem pointless to bring the topic of conservation up at one of these meetings when the only topic is who is gonna kill what fish, but we are going to kill them all.
