Did anyone see this on Nat Geo? It was one of the Coolest things I've ever seen on T.V. Those granders are unreal, make sure to check it out. thumbs

I agree a great show and an amazing fish!

However another resource in bad shape due to overfishing. The prices paid for them for sushi is just crazy. A fish sold this past winter at Japan's Tsuhiji fish market for $736,000 (more than $1,200/#).

I never knew that they started their journey in the Caribbian waters.

I was kind of hoping he was going to get swallowed by a whale ;-)

I have also been watching Wicked Tuna. I wish they would spend some time talking about thier tackle and the regulations to protect the fish. About the only thing they have mentioned is the 73" minimum. It seem as only one fish so far was close, and they really didn't even pretend to take any precautions to protect that one. He got the harpoon just like all the others.

Hey Gutz - the 73" regulation is for commercial re-selling. If under that, they just keep the fish for personal consumption. Anything close gets the 'poon. If its not close - it gets cut off. The regulations come into play on the number of commercial licenses issued, season length and quota. Within those bounds, they just slaughter. It would be better to move to a slot size to protect the big breeders. The problem is that its impossible to accurately measure a pissed off fish along side the boat without hurting it or the crew.

Sporties are very well regulated. For example, North Carolina is one fish per angler per year and one fish per boat per day - regardless of number of fisherman on said boat. One and done!

We are still years ahead of most other countries when it comes to protecting the stocks. Its not a perfect system, but its getting better every year with more data and awareness.
