Try Water Dog or Gun Dog. It's not too early just be careful in introducing firearms (noise). Without doing it correctly you could cause problems that you will not be able to overcome.

Stay far, far away from Wolters (water dog/game dog). His methods are outdated and to begin with were ineffective and sloppy at best. I also advise not reading either of Milners books because they're illogical and not very well put together.

A great all around book for retriever training is the 10 Minute Retriever by John and Amy Dahl. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...ce&n=507846

Also, books by Lardy and Tarrent are very good tools.

Retriever training generally starts at 7 weeks of age, so nope, she's not too young. Read all you can on it and ask questions. The library is a great resource for books and videos.

Bullshooter, no that's not too old at all. In fact, because your dog is on the hyper side will make him easier to train.

Even for an adult dog, the 10 minute retriever would be a great reference. You basically want to work on retrieving and obedience first. Add in some dead birds and within no time you'll have a bird dog.

You gotta do some training, though. Too often people will take an older dog once hunting and give up because the dog doesn't perform. Eventhough the word "retriever" is at the end of Labrador doesn't mean they'll work without training. Putting in the time to train will result in a working dog.
