I can think of at least one more use for the bucket.

I used to be pretty anal about keeping fish cold, putting ice in the box or cold packs in the cooler. Unless it is unusually warm (60F is warm here) and/or the fish find themselves in direct sunlight, I haven't noticed any quality difference. On these types of harvest trips, fish are typically in the box for 3.5 hours or less and due to water temps, the box/cooler stays pretty cool.

Thinking good thoughts for you Jeff.
I rarely bonk fish anymore, maybe just stun them if they are super active. Pop a gill and let them bleed out alive. (I bleed chickens out alive, and they just go to sleep)
I hang a rope over the side of the drifter, then bring them into the boat after a few minutes.

I cut the gills, and throw them in the box/cooler. If it isn't the kind of fish box that self bails, then I throw a half bucket of water in there. I never think about ice or anything like that, but I also usually stop fishing for the day around lunch time so I have never had any quality isssues.

Dialysis is nearly a nightmare and a transplant would be your ticket to freedom!
Congratulations Sir.
Good luck and I will keep you in my thoughts!
