Line shelf-life question

Can anyone tell me how long maxima ultragreen tends to last before it looses strength. I have 10# leaders that are a year old that have not been used and are tucked away in a tackle box. How long until I should retie these? Thanks all.

i've got spools of line i've been cutting leaders off of for years. as long as it isn't stored in direct sunlight i think it'd be fine.

As long as the line hasn't had any chemical reactions with any other plastics it was stored in or near...it'll fish fine.

But if your having to steelhead but once a year your going to have to start rotating out those leaders! Use those old leaders for coho, chum, pinks next year. But for steelheading, a fish of a 1000 casts, with a leader that's been sittting in a tackle box for a whole year, ok half a season??? Save yourself the frustration......spin up some new one's you'll be glad you did!!! Winterun

I agree with the above.
One thing I do when I purchase a new spool of leader material is write the month and year on the back of it with a black sharpie.
I just like knowing how old it is when I go to use it.

When mono has been compromised, you can tell by feeling it and looking at it. It will feel and behave differently than the good stuff. As many have said, without having been exposed to the elements and/or foreign substances, mono will last (without compromise) for many years. I think my oldest bulk spool of 15lb UG is going on 5 years old and it still knots like it is brand new and breaks under about 35lbs of static load

Line will photo degrade over time.
Is a fishing trip or a lost wall hanger worth the price of replacing the line?

Used Max 40 for broodstocking for years. Stopped using the hold over on the spools as it did change even stored in the closet. It became brittle and would break much more often as it just seemed to loose the stretch. Learned to get the line from a hi volume outlet to insure the stuff had not been setting around forever.
