Since I was not guiding today I decided to recover one of the driftboats that has recently gone down in the nooch. With the blessing of the WDFW and the owners of the boat I set out to do this. Well after about 4 hours in the 40 degree water in a leaky dry suit and some serious tow strap and climbing rope engineering I succeeded and contacted the owners and they are suppossed to come pick it up this weekend and pay da man !
The boat needs about 400 to 600 dollars of work at the clack shack but other then that it is in pretty good shape..............I did find an almost empty 1/2 gallon of Vodka in the boat so I am thinking that might have had a little to do with the capsizing of this boat in this basic class 1 river............BTW the bottle is empty now....LOL
Here are some pics that I had an on looker take while he was in awe that my dumbass was neck deep in the water !
He kept saying he has never seen anyone so tough and I kept telling him no............so stupid......LOL

Peace
Fly

Joe, Good job, Is there salvage rules on Navigatable waterways in Washington, So the owner has no choice but Pay da man. I know you did a good deed and should be rewarded. Just wondering what the law was on salavage?

Bill,
The trees are still there, they have been hacked on a bit but not much so there is still a little bit of a hazard there but all people should do is get out of there boats and walk it around them, its praticly at the takeout so why ruin your day in front of an audience.................

also I have every intention on handing the boat over to the owners, but the law is pretty vague on ownership of it after its been in the water a week or more, but what I have been told is that whoever posses it owns it soooooo
on that note I expect to be paid and paid well for doing this......it was no walk in the park being in that cold ass water that long when my damn drysuit leaked like it did................

Besides I ruined about a 200.00 piece of REI climbing rope doing this....

if anyone knows the law to the "T" a little point in the right direction would be sweet...............

Peace

There was maybe 2 -3 cocktails left in that bottle, thats it because I mixed em strong when I got out because I needed a little seperation from my body at that time...................sat in my truck with the heat cranked for about a 1/2 hour before I got inspired again to clean it out and get it on the trailer....
must hae been about 5 yards of sand and gravel in it as well.......had to shoVel it and bail the boat once I got it right side up and on the bank....

Fly, you probably have already, but do a search on marine salvage law. From what I have read you are good. I couldn't find specifics on keeping the vessel or rewards but you seem to be entitled to reward. A lot of talk about contracts. Didn't have time to read all of it. And couldn't find the exact definition on abandoned. Just do a search there are lots of legal sites and info on wikipedia.

Don't know about WA, but down here, there are no 'salvage rights':

Quote:
Who owns a lost or abandoned boat, and if you find one, can you salvage it? The old belief that a ship abandoned by its crew was free for the taking is no longer true. There is no "finder's keepers" rule for boats, floating homes, boat houses or other vessels. Lost or abandoned boats remain the property of their owner, whether registered or not.

Best info was oregon.gov/boat laws. Did a search for marine salvage laws in Oregon. Really having trouble finding info on as to what happens if you didn't have a contract. Had you made a contract you would have Possessory Chattel Liens stating that if the contract wasn't met tou could sell the boat. Not sure what the law is if they had no intent on salvaging. Several phone numbers on the site that I imagine could answer any questions. If the had or said they had plans to recover it you might be fuked. But I don't know the law to a "T'" so maybe I shouldn't have chimed in!:)

p.s. If they are cheap give me a call, I'll make an offer!
