While my buddy was hunting the late archery hunt with good success he made the cardinal mistake. He legally killed a cow elk. After he got over to her he noticed she had two arrows stuck in her. The one that killed her was his and the other had occurred sometime during the early season archery hunt or before. It was getting late and decided to butcher his prize. No phone on him and he did not know there was a requirement to call. After hours of work he headed back towards where he believed his truck was. When he got to his truck a man was standing there drinking coffee waiting in the rain. It was............... the man waiting for him. He incurred multiple violations starting with unlawfully dispatching a wounded animal. He did not immediately notify the authorities as soon as he discovered it had been shot previously. It just gets uglier from there. He had shot a blacktail the day before legally and processed it in he field. He was in trouble for not leaving positive ID horns or nuts attached to the animal while in the field. They tested the meat from the skull cape at camp and it was the legally harvested blacktail. In the end he had thousands of dollars in fines and up to 4 years in prison coming, but the judge removed everything, but he still lost his sportsman's privileges. The state really needs to simplify our rules. You need to have a law degree to completely understand all the extraneous rules.

I fail to see what purpose was served by these citations. Get your senator/representative involved to try and get the conviction undone through appeal.

He was hunting, and the goal is to kill an animal. The ticky tacky regulation sh!t that requires you to keep your attorney on speed dial is nuts. Next thing you know, they'll require us to hunt with blanks so we don't hurt the animals.

One of my friends first ever elk had a remnant of an arrow in her. One elk another buddy shot had a muzzleloader bullet lodged in the shoulder. You do not realize this when you pull the trigger, and sometimes until you butcher the animal.

From a law abiding citizen standpoint, will someone please tell me why someone thinks this makes sense?

Thanks.

Specific RCW's that he was charged under would be helpful.

Must be something missing in the story here. There is no requirement I can find in all of Title 77 that says you have to report having killed and animal that was previously wounded. As far as having a critter hanging in camp and not having the head attached, but on scene. I cant imaging a warden giving someone a ticket for that. Every stinking camp in all of the little naches etc...would be needing a ticket. We have had our skinned and quartered elk hanging in camp and been checked without any problem for not having the head or bag still attached. Same as the other camps when they do drive throughs checking hanging elk. Like Dogfish said, a specific RCW would certainly help, but I dount the whole story is in that first post.

Definitley something fishy with that story. Lots of animals are killed that have been shot previously. What difference does that make? There's no law to report than and no need for any such law? What would be the purpose? Why would the WDFW care if you legally killed an animal and it had been shot before with an arrow or a bullet? That's ridiculous.

Ketaman, check with your buddy and ask him what the REAL story is. He did not get in trouble for what he said he did.

Maybe you don't know the law as well as you think you do? Why would he lie? He said he got all fines dropped. I have heard of head and nuts needing to be intact in the field. Sounds like that could happen, it's just unfortunate. I have met more than my share of dikhead wardens. Namely the prick that was out here in Cowlitz Co. for a long time. Won't say his name but I'm sure many know who I'm talking about.

Sure I do, and so does most anybody who hunts in this state, and any other state really. Because I doubt anywhere has a law that says you can't shoot an animal that has previously been shot. Looks like I wasn't the only person on this forum who didn't think the story was 100% accurate.
