Hello, anyone have any idea or information regarding the Queets. This is what I have been told. There is a float approximately 4 miles and you put in at a bar.

I have fished the queets as a bankie and observed DB's on the river. I am going to forks soon and think this would be a cool 1/2 day float on the way there.

I have a map but I have heard of a washout. Also I have heard this river is big and it is tough as a drift boat because it is so fast..you need low water.
Anyone care to offer some advice? words of discouragement? Words of encouragement?

I'll give you some sage advice. Go there, spend the weekend, or better yet spend a week exploring. Meet the locals, buy a tank or two of gas, buy dinner, buy beers, hire a guide (like the guy who owns this BB) talk about why you're there. If you love the outdoors, and truly show your passion, you'll find great reward. If you're a douche looking for a quick fish, you'll get beat up, go home empty handed and never go back. The people who really know, don't talk, that's why you'll get zero helpful replies on a post like this. It's not hard, you could pick up a copy of the Washington Gazeteer, you could use Google Earth, but if you show up in the area, with genuine interest and passion, you'll learn more in a day than you will in a lifetime on the web. Make a journey - remember, it's not the fish, it's the thousand casts and the friends made along the journey that matter. There are soooo many cool people along the coast, legends, in fact. Barlow, Ball, Graham, Ruble, Leons....... Learn their story, their lives. It's amazing. I'm a simple man, but the friends/acquaintences I made in Forks over the years I was fishing there are the most real people I know. Go forth and learn. Enjoy the Journey.

Times have changed out there since we had to pull boats up to the lot under the bridge for a takeout. I think. Point being this is a river without a lot of access and you had better know where you want to launch and where you are going to take out and be able to identify that takeout from the water. Or it could be a VERY long day.....

Saundu,

That 1/2 day float you heard about on the lower Queets, . . . well, it's a full day, not a half day. If you launch after noon, you'll get to the bridge after dark. And the takeout in private Indian land. You have to put $5 in the box to park there and take out. It's an easy float, except around log jams.

BTW, it's netted 5 days/week, and there hasn't been any high water to allow some fish by for a while, so reports there and all the coastal rivers are slow fishing.

But really it's Romulous and Edgar you should worry about. If you do go there just make sure and have a hefty supply of pinners and maybe a space heater or two.

Salmo,

They actually net it 6 days per week until march and drift netting is allowed at 2,500 cfs or more...which is pretty much all the time. frown

Locals? Legends? On the Queets? Never seen either one there as far as I know, unless one of the bears was Yogi. Not sure the "get to know the locals" line applies here. Just sayin'.... The "put in your time" cliche definitely applies, though.

Thanks Drifter. Brutal netting season. Especially during the brunt of the nate run. Have not looked. Is this similar to previous years?

I don't fish the Queets/Salmon/Clearwater, much anymore. I heard that the Nov/Dec/January fishery was not close to many past years.

Lot's of travel time, for not many fish.

Yeah. I tried the Salmon area twice in Nov./Dec. and it was dead. Heard very few good reports. Apparently, the IHN really put the hurt on the QIN hatchery numbers this year.

Didn't realize they were netting 5 and 4 days/wk. through the entire winter/spring season. That sure makes the prospects for March/April (and the future of the wild steelhead) look crappy. What a shame.

They do that schedule every year...the only saving Grace for the Queets steelhead is that it is unfishable, even for the nets, fairly regularly.

Fish on...
