I don't even know what to say. This is terrible news. If anything, Mr. Rose helped foster my own appreciation, via his writing, for the fly fishing history and traditions of the Olympic Peninsula. You will be missed. RIP

P.S. Maybe you will finally get see Syd Glasso tie a spey fly.

A personal friend and a real bummer!
Makes you think of your own life and how fragile it is.
Better enjoy it now!

I hired some days with Doug a while back and caught my first Calawah steelhead swinging flies. He was a lot of fun to shoot the $hit with. It was an amazing day. After I got to know him he always was willing to share info and very friendly when I headed out to the OP. I'm really sorry to hear he passed away. He was a really nice man and had a real passion for the fish.

I saw this post and immediately thought of either Doug or George... both respected Deans of the OP in their own circle of influence.

Sorry to hear about Doug, but also glad to hear it wasn't George.

The loss of either man would have been tragic.

RIP, Doug.

RIP Doug.

I heard he was ill. Thought he might beat it (cancer, that is), but nobody is getting out of here alive. In addition to his books, he gave slide show presentations to fly clubs around the region that always provided a refreshing perspective on the OP and Hood Canal.

I haven't seen Doug in many years, but we both shared a deep passion for chasing cutthroat around the Pen. He really helped me breakthrough some winter steelhead fly fishing barriers I encountered back in the 80's. Once he squared me away tho I moved on like the capricious cracker I've always been; but Doug, ever the stalwart, remained true to a vision till the end. Peace and rest, bro.
