As of 1:12pm today, David Jennings is no longer a WDFW commissioner. I really appreciate everybody's help getting their comments into the Governor's office. Our voices were heard.
Also, from the Cabezon hearing on Friday, over 400 comments to keep the season the same, against 10 or so for a 6 week season, so thanks for getting your comments entered into the record. It really helped.
Hopefully we can start to undo some of the damage to our fishing opportunities that were created by Jennings. It took three years to get the guy out, but it is done now.
At Friday's meeting, it was nice to see Carpenter & Mahnken on the verge of being openly hostile to Jennings.
Sportsfishermen can get something done!
First order of business would be to thank the commission for their work, and to remind them that no individual commissioner should be allowed to abuse the system in the future.
Good job folks!

Right on! As long as we get a better replacement.
THANKS to you guys who really watch this carefully and alert the rest of us to take action! Glad it worked both for the cab season (I absolutely love cabs and have a "secret" spot in the sound that produces large ones consistently) and for outing Jennings.

That was a good thing to remove him. But, just to throw gasoline on a fire, why should there not be a member of the Commission with commerical connections/experiance/interest. WDFW does regulate commercial fisheries, commercial game farms, and commerical fish culture.
Didn't we fight a war over no taxation without representation?

I think there should be commercial representation on the commission. They certainly are a stakeholder. I think there are already folks on the commission who support commercial interests as well.
Here's a weird one. I think the Tribes should have a seat on the commission. The statements made as to the status of the "co-manager" relationship was pretty telling. Having the two parties trying to go down the same road at the same time is not working.
There needs to be a single set of rules, not one set that is enforced, and another set that gets enforced whenever it is politically expedient to do so. Just my thoughts.

Even though Jennings is no longer a Commissioner I'm sure he isn't done with his agenda. Anything that is the work of REEF is pretty much suspect at this point in time because of his antics, and if they are not aware of the issue, I'll certainly be willing to show up and make them aware.

One Gov proposed the nomination of Guy McMinds (I believe) of QIN. The outcry was pretty hot.
I would support Tribal representation on the Commission if they managed all the fisheries. I can understand having the Co-managers involved, but allowing them to directly regulate the non-Indian side but have no non-Indian input on Tribal doesn't seem equal.
WA and BC do regualate shared fisheries when the both have to agree to the openings. There is no balance like that here.

I know Guy McMinds personally. He was very active in the establishment of the current status quo, before it went the way it is now. Decent man.
I, like you, think that the only way to really have a true "co-management" system would be one where everyone played by the same rules, and from the same playbook.
"In common with", to me means that they fish alongside us, not before us (coastal crab), or way after us (steelhead), and that we use the same rules and regs. How this got bastardized into the current situation is a travesty.

Not sure how many of our members are aware, but Guy died last summer at the age of 75.

Just saw the news about Jennings and I am ECSTATIC! Thanks to all who helped unseat him and opposed this recent cabezon BS jennings was behind. I think this shows that there is some measure of sanity over there in Olympia.
I actually believe in the current set of commissioners. They may not always vote my way, but they are for the most part levelheaded and pragmatic. Hopefully the new appointee will be the same. Also, we need to get Miranda Wecker re-appointed.

Didn't we fight a war over no taxation without representation? I think this would open the commission to anyone with an agenda rather than the overall well being of the people of the state in mind. Think about it. How many special interest groups can you think of who would feel they should be represented? I can think of 30 at least. Way too big a group. I think a balanced set of representatives can make decent decisions if they have the people in mind.

Just to clarify: Are you agreeing to have tribal co managers involved in non tribal decisions? Or not involved because they do not have non tribal involved in tribal decisions? I think I understand what you are saying but maybe not. Thanks, Rick I find it helpful to ask the obvious questions that others might have. PS Did I say yet how happy I am that this guy, Jennings, is gone? I have had it on my list for 4 years. Check! Yay!!!!!!!! OK, who should replace him?
